    • Totally unenforceable

Post-War Debts

  • England and France had to pay the U.S.
    • How? 2 ways:
      • Sell goods, but couldn’t.
      • Or they can dig into Germany for money
  • Germany couldn’t pay England and France; their economy was ruined by the Treaty of Versailles
  • The U.S. helped Germany by investing $2.5 Billion (basically paying ourselves)

Consumer Revolution

  • People were able to make purchases on goods that were previously unavailable because prices came down on products
  • LETS GO BUY A CAR
  • LETS GO BUY A FRIDGERATOR
  • LETS GO BUY A HOUSE

Installment Buying

  • CONSUMER CREDIT = DEBT
  • Advantages:
    • Pay as you enjoy
    • More time to come up with money
    • Made items affordable
  • Disadvantages:
    • People still couldn’t pay small amounts
    • Interest made item more expensive in the long run
    • People went into debt and didn’t realize it

Buying on the Margin

  • Basically credit… but on the STOCK MARKET.
  • Purchase stock with a downpayment, and pay it off when you sell it at a profit
  • Worked great IF the value of the stock continued to rise…. But does it always do that?

  • Original KKK had been outlawed shortly after the passage of the Enforcement Acts
  • The film “Birth of a Nation” was wildly popular and depicted the destruction of American society due to African Americans taking control.
  • Nativism was a large motivator.
