“Be strong and of a good courage.”

SCRIPTURE

1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,

2 Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.

5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

“Be strong and of a good courage.”

Ann M. Dibb

Former Member of the Young Women General Presidency

Joshua and the children of Israel lived long, long ago. But in our day we too are striving to enter a “land of promise.” Our greatest goal is to obtain eternal life with our Heavenly Father…We can find courage and strength in th[e] promise that the Lord will always be there for us and will never leave us alone. We are taught that Heavenly Father knows and loves each of His children…No matter what you may face in your personal journey,…pray, be patient, and remember God’s promise: “I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee”.

…When applied in our everyday lives, the…“small and simple” guides from the book of Joshua will combine to provide the most powerful source of courage and strength there is: faith in our Heavenly Father and in His Son, Jesus Christ. Heavenly Father knows our individual journeys are not easy. We are faced every day with situations that require courage and strength.

I Will Be What I Believe(Music for Children)

MUSIC

1. Living in this world

with change all around

But with the prophets' words,

I'll stand on solid ground

Even though it's still hard,

with questions that arise

Every day, I will say

2. We'll spread the gospel wide

throughout all the earth

With Jesus as our guide

we'll wield the sword of truth

Even though it's still hard,

with questions that arise

Every day, I will say

We are as the army of Helaman

We have been taught in our youth

And we will be the Lord's missionaries to

bring the world his truth

Chorus:

I'll have faith like brother Joseph

and the strength of the pioneers

I'll be brave as a stripling warrior

and like Nephi persevere

I will spread God's love to all I know and serve

I will plead with my Father on my knees

I will be what I believe

I can think about the scriptures day and night

SCRIPTURE

7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.

8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

I can think about the scriptures day and night

Richard G. Scott

Former Member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Pondering a scripture…gives great direction to life. The scriptures can form a foundation of support…Pondering a passage of scripture can be a key to unlock revelation and the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Ghost…Scriptures can communicate different meanings at different times in our life, according to our needs. A scripture that we may have read many times can take on nuances of meaning that are refreshing and insightful when we face a new challenge in life.

How do you personally use the scriptures? …Do you use all of the standard works, including the Old Testament? I have found precious truths in the pages of the Old Testament that are key ingredients to the platform of truth that guides my life and acts as a resource when I try to share a gospel message with others. For that reason, I love the Old Testament. I find precious jewels of truth spread throughout its pages.

Each day my whole life through.

I’ll come to understand.

Are the things that I must do.

The Spirit will guide, and, deep inside,

I’ll know the scriptures are true.

Both faith and works are necessary for salvation

Both faith and works are necessary for salvation

SCRIPTURE

3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country.

4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:

9; 12-13 And she said unto the men[…] Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token: And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.

14 And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

Both faith and works are necessary for salvation

Robert D. Hales

Former Member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

The first step to finding faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is to let His word…touch your heart. But it is not enough merely to let those words wash over you, as if they alone could transform you. We must do our part…hearing requires an active effort. “Faith without works is dead.” It means taking seriously what is taught, considering it carefully, studying it out in our minds…Once we find the beginnings of our faith in Jesus, our Heavenly Father allows our faith to be strengthened…

Only faith that He suffered for our sakes will give us the strength to endure to the end. When we gain this faith, we experience a mighty change of heart, and…we become stronger and begin to feel a desire for the welfare of our brothers and sisters. We pray for them, that they too will be lifted and strengthened through faith on the Atonement of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Faith(Children’s Songbook #96)

MUSIC

1. Faith is knowing the sun will rise, lighting each new day.

Faith is knowing the Lord will hear my prayers each time I pray.

Faith is like a little seed: If planted, it will grow.

Faith is a swelling within my heart. When I do right, I know.

2. Faith is knowing I lived with God before my mortal birth.

Faith is knowing I can return when my life ends on earth.

Faith is trust in God above; In Christ, who showed the way.

Faith is strengthened; I feel it grow Whenever I obey

I can experience God’s “wonders” if I have faith in Jesus Christ

SCRIPTURE

5 And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the LORD will do wonders among you.

14 And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people;

15-16 And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,) That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, […] and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.

17 And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.

I can experience God’s “wonders” if I have faith in Jesus Christ

Gérald Caussé

Former Presiding Bishop

For us, as Latter-day Saints, wonders also occur in our individual lives. They include our own personal conversion, the answers we receive to our prayers, and the tender blessings God showers upon us daily. To marvel at the wonders of the gospel is a sign of faith. It is to recognize the hand of the Lord in our lives and in everything around us. Our amazement also produces spiritual strength. It gives us the energy to remain anchored in our faith and to engage ourselves in the work of salvation… Our amazement should be rooted in the core principles of our faith, in the purity of our covenants and ordinances, and in our most simple acts of worship.

…As we follow Jesus Christ, God bears witness to us “with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will.” …I bear witness that the wonders and marvels of the gospel are anchored in the greatest of all of God’s gifts—the Savior’s Atonement.

Tell Me the Stories of Jesus(Children's Songbook #57)

MUSIC

1. Tell me the stories of Jesus I love to hear,

Things I would ask him to tell me if he were here.

Scenes by the wayside, tales of the sea,

Stories of Jesus, tell them to me.

2. Oh, let me hear how the children stood round his knee.

I shall imagine his blessings resting on me;

Words full of kindness, deeds full of grace,

All in the love-light of Jesus’ face.

3. Tell me, in accents of wonder, how rolled the sea,

Tossing the boat in a tempest on Galilee!

And how the Master, ready and kind,

Chided the billows and hushed the wind.

Words: W. H. Parker, 1845–1929

Obedience brings God’s power into my life

SCRIPTURE

2-4 And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour. And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days. And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams’ horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.

15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.

16 And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.

20 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

Obedience brings God’s power into my life

Howard W. Hunter

President of the Church

1994 - 1995

Several experiences in the life of Joshua are instructive to us today regarding the importance placed by the Lord on keeping commitments and on being committed to following the commandments and direction he has given.

…[W]hen Joshua was directed to destroy the city of Jericho that lay before them, the great walls of the city stood as an imposing and physically impossible barrier to Israel’s success—or at least so it seemed. Not knowing the means, but assured as to the end, Joshua carried out the instructions he had been given by a messenger of the Lord. His commitment was to complete obedience. His concern was to do precisely as he was instructed, that the promise of the Lord would be fulfilled…Surely the experiences of the great prophets of the Old Testament have been recorded to help us understand the importance of choosing the path of strict obedience.

“Choose you this day whom ye will serve.”

30 of 34

“Choose you this day whom ye will serve.”

SCRIPTURE

14 Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.

15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

16 And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;

22 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.

“Choose you this day whom ye will serve.”

Henry B. Eyring

Of the First Presidency

The scriptures are filled with examples of wise servants of God who treasured the day they were in and chose to do what they could to bring cleansing. Joshua was one...A morning prayer and an early search in the scriptures to know what we should do for the Lord can set the course of a day. We can know which task, of all those we might choose, matters most to God and therefore to us…

Hard as things seem today, they will be better in the next day if you choose to serve the Lord this day with your whole heart…[W]hen your burdens become too heavy, the Lord, whom you have served, will carry what you cannot… [B]y choosing to serve Him this day, you will feel His love and grow to love Him more… By serving Him this day, you will come to know Him better. You will feel His love and appreciation. You would not want to delay receiving that blessing.

Choose the Right Way(Children’s Songbook #160)

1. There's a right way to live and be happy;

It is choosing the right ev'ry day.

I am learning the teachings of Jesus;

They will help me and show me the way.

2. Through the gospel I learn to be prayerful,

To have faith, to repent, to obey,

And I know if I live by his teachings,

I will truly be happy each day.
