Tools I Use With/For Students

  1. Google Slides I present during every live class - shared later in a shared folder, with links embedded, EXAMPLE
  2. Canvas for ALL assignments, links to other resources on front page
  3. Zoom for all live classes (with breakout rooms) and office hours
  4. Google Forms for breakout room answers...more on that next!
  5. TOP Strategies: One-on-one meetings and BREAKOUT ROOMS!

Engaging Students: Breakout Rooms

Example from my actual class

  • Community building in small groups is important!

Students feel better about taking RISKS with MATH if they are more comfortable with each other.

Engaging Students: Breakout Rooms 2

  • Sample activities:
  • Norms:
    • Unmute and share your video.
    • Step up, share, step back.
    • Check-in frequently with each other.
  • I enter each room several times, & ask how I can help.
  • I teach groups how to call the host for help.
  • Google forms filled out by each group, due before return to whole group.

Engaging Students: Breakout Rooms 3

  • Upon return from breakout rooms, I go over solutions & answer questions.
  • I review form submissions for accuracy & thoroughness of answers, and reward 1 group (per class per day) with a bonus point.
  • I also share google form responses (anonymously) such as:
    • Answers to the fun getting-to-know-you-questions
    • Open-ended math responses
    • Open-ended reflective responses

Motivating/Assessing Students

6

  • I also used weekly Asynchronous (ASY) To-Do Lists
    • Students upload photos of their notes for credit, and answer questions, including reflective self-evaluation or additional task completion - Example
    • Students upload photos of homework in a separate assignment
  • In MyOpenMath, the tool I use for weekly tests, students have a time limit, but are able to redo a question for 10% penalty (STATISTICS, in Algebra I had no penalty)
  • I also did MONTHLY one-on-one meeting with students - this was the BEST, and I highly recommend it!!!

One-on-One Meetings

7

  • I always had a theme or set of questions and SLIDE they had to create and explain.
  • For example, for January, the end of our term, I asked:
    • What is one challenge you foresee in finishing the course?
    • What is something you’re looking forward to over the next week/month?
    • Slide of what you did over Winter Break (3 pics, 2 words, 1 takeaway)
      • (each PERIOD gets an EDITABLE slides link, making a COPY of my example slide to edit, so all 30 students are in ONE slide show)

  • Supporting students through this crazy year has been my joy!
  • I don’t what the future will hold, but I know one way or another, we’ll be together for it, whether online or in person.
  • THANK YOU FOR LOOKING AT MY SLIDES!!
