A Message from DEAN MARCI about Multi Culti

Please read the next few bulletin slides carefully. They give some background, shared values, vision, and plans for how we will work together over the course of this year and the years to come to do a more authentic job of creating experiences to truly broaden and deepen our understanding, respect, and appreciation of cultures that are different than our own.

THE HEADLINE: Multi-Culti, as we have recently come to know it, is on hold for now….

Before panicking, please read the following slides and trust that we will work on this together as a school community.

Mission

The students and staff at Community High School will work together in forums to hold a kick-off event on the last day before Thanksgiving Break that will lay the groundwork for engaging together throughout the rest of the school year to deepen our understanding, respect, and appreciation of cultures that are different than our own. As we work to broaden our awareness and perspectives related to race and culture, we will also broaden our awareness and perspectives related to hunger in our county by raising money for Food Gatherers. During this kick-off event we will first turn inward to learn about our own culture and the cultures of others in our forums. As we grow throughout the year, we will also continue to plan for an event in the spring that further broadens our understanding of culture by working together within forum to dive deeper into one particular culture. This event will likely be on an Early Release Day and will more closely resemble the Multi-Culti day we have done in recent years. The hope is to continue to deepen our understanding, respect, and appreciation of cultures that are different than our own while being mindful to avoid the “Single Story.”

VISION

    • Provide training for teachers for how to have culturally sensitive conversations that facilitate dialog and growth in difficult areas like race and culture
    • Provide workshops and opportunities in classes for students on how to have culturally sensitive conversations and participate in dialog in difficult areas like race and culture
    • Have these conversations embedded throughout our curriculum and have other events throughout the year like guest speakers, seeing a movie, participating in an activity, and/or having further dialog
    • As we grow throughout the year, we will plan for how we create an event in the spring on an Early Release Day that begins to further broaden our understanding of culture by working together within forum to dive deeper into one particular culture. The hope is to continue to deepen our understanding, respect, and appreciation of cultures that are different than our own and being mindful to avoid the “Single Story.”
    • Continue the conversation all year long, every year

GUIDELINE FOR THE “UN-NAMED KICK-OFF EVENT BEFORE THANKSGIVING”

    • Each student will prepare their own cultural story and a dish to share with their forum. Guiding questions will be provided. This does not have to be super long. Here are some options:
      1. Make a poster
      2. Bring in some artifacts and have a written story to share (Could be a few paragraphs, could be a few bullet points, could be something more elaborate…)
      3. Create a mini children’s book
      4. Seniors could share their common app essay about culture
    • In forums on this day, students will share about their cultures and feast together on foods representing the many cultures and traditions within the forum.
    • We will have a time together to celebrate and share about the money we have raised for Food Gatherers, and will also hear from a few seniors sharing their cultural stories. Many seniors have already written an essay on this topic for their common app this year.
    • Details regarding guiding questions for students to share their culture, the detailed timelines and activities for the day, and a rubric for measuring our success toward the mission of this Kick-off event will be provided next Tuesday in forums.

What led up to this….

    • Many conversations among staff and in forum council about how important it is this year, more than ever, to be really mindful of how we talk about race and culture.
    • We watched this clip: The Danger of a Single Story
    • We decided we needed more time, training, and conversations to really do this work right
    • We have committed to stop talking about how we need to make some changes so that Multi-Culti is more respectful; instead, we decided we needed to at least start the process and commit to working on this together all year long and not treat this as a one-shot event.

In Memory of Justin Tang

Community Ensemble Theatre and Matt Johnson's forum are collaborating to put together a book honoring Justin to give to his family. If you have a memory, collage, story, letter for, picture of/for Justin, or anything else that you would like to include in this book, please turn it into Ruby Lowenstein or Matt Johnson before the end of the day on Friday.

Make sure your offering fits on an 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper. We will have art and writing supplies available in room 222 during the school days both Thursday and Friday, as well as supplies set up Thursday on the first floor from 3:30-5:30. This is a meaningful way to show Justin's family how much we love him, and to celebrate his memory.
