Advanced Placement (AP)

Opportunity to challenge yourself academically, set yourself apart in the college admission process and potentially earn college credit and placement with a successful exam score
Build college, career and military skills with rigorous learning and support in a high school classroom

(Brief description of Honors and AP + GPA) Honors-level classes in high school are college-prep courses that prepare students for Advanced Placement or college-level coursework. In Denton ISD both Honors-level and AP courses are weighted on a 5.0 scale vs. a 4.0 scale. These classes offer a more in-depth approach to content and the pace of the class moves faster. There are definite advantages to enrolling and excelling in advanced-level courses. They’re designed to prepare students for college curriculum. They prepare students for ACT/SAT test, and if a student scores a 3 or higher on an AP Exam, they could possibly receive college credit for coursework completed in high school.

Dual credit is another way for students to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously. Denton ISD has agreements with North Central Texas College, Texas Woman’s University, and the University of North Texas to gain college credit while in high school. As we move through the scheduling grid, you’ll see what options you have for choosing advanced-level courses.
