Water Footprint

What is a Water Footprint?

Water footprints is how much water you use regularly

  • help to evaluate water use patterns on an individual and national level
  • display the usage of water in manufacturing and producing goods for businesses
    • account for the amount of water contaminated during manufacturing and production

Calculate Your Water Footprint

Discuss with a neighbor:

  • What is your personal water footprint in gallons/day?
  • What is your household water footprint in gallons/day?
  • Where does your water usage lie? (indoor, outdoor, virtual)
  • What is something you will do differently to reduce water waste?
  • What is something you found interesting?

Importance of Clean Water

  • 3% of the Earth’s water is freshwater, suitable for drinking
    • 0.5% is available to utilize (rest are in glaciers, atmosphere, soil)
  • We use water for…
    • Nutrition
      • Water provides essential minerals and nutrients to the body. Sixty per cent of the human body is made of water. One has to keep drinking clean water to maintain a healthy balance.
    • Disease Prevention
      • Cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis are some of the life-threatening conditions that can afflict a human body through lack of pure water. The primary reasons behind all these ailments are contaminated water. If dirty water is the only means of satisfying your thirst, then you are exposing yourself to risks as well.
    • Agriculture and Food
      • Clean water is an essential ingredient for the production of food. Agriculture and food production has to be completed with the availability of clean water. If contaminated water is fed to the crop, then bacteria may infect the yield. The pests may also enter the human body through affected produce.
    • Better sanitation facilities
      • We all know that clean water is vital for drinking. It is essential for sanitation, as well. For washing clothes, cooking, and cleaning.

Importance/ Reasons of Clean Water

Reasons to Conserve Water

  • Saving water = Saving energy
  • It helps to preserve our environment (esp. overflowing gutters)
  • It makes water available for recreational purposes
  • Reducing your water usage also reduces your carbon footprint
  • If you save water it can save your money bills
  • Reduction in interior water use cuts wastewater flows

What is Ocean Acidification?

The reduction in pH of the Earth’s ocean

  • Caused by the increased absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere since CO2 is increasingly added via combustion (global warming)
  • The lower the pH level, the more acidic the ocean becomes.
  • Low pH negatively affects shells and skeletons of ocean organisms.
    • includes: depressed metabolic rates, lowered immune responses and reduced energy for basic functions such as reproductions
    • All negatively impacting marine ecosystems’ functioning

Role of Ocean Acidification

Effect of Ocean Acidification:

  1. Existing Calcium Carbonate Structures Dissolve
  2. New Calcium Carbonate Structures Do Not FormOrganisms can not create shells as they develop, so they die. Whole species can go extinct, impacting food webs.

What Can You Do?

Kitchen

  • Operate the dishwasher only when completely full.
  • Scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher

Bathroom

03

  • Reduce shower time
  • Reduce sink time (washing, shaving, etc)
  • Never leave water running

Outside

  • Avoid fast fashion, as much as possible.
  • Bucket car wash, not hose
  • Use highly efficient showers, sinks, washers etc.

Infographics!

  • You may work by yourself on this or with a partner
  • Make an infographic highlighting on simple acts people can do to conserve water and some statistics on why this is important
    • you may have to do some brief research but you can use the facts we have presented today
  • you can make this digitally or by paper

Digital version:

  • pull out your computer (share if working with partner) and create an account on Canva if you haven’t used it already
  • search for an “infographic” template

Paper version:

  • We will provide markers and poster paper
