Scientific Notation

  • Is used to express very large or very small numbers

Scientific notation is a short hand way to write numbers (it uses exponents)

Large numbers have positive powers of 10

Example: 9,600,000 = 9.6 x 106

Small numbers have negative powers of 10

Example:

.00049 = 4.9 x 10 -4

Converting to Scientific Notation

Step 1 - Position the decimal point to get a single digit number

Step 2 - Count the number of places the decimal point was moved to get that single digit number

Step 3 - Write the number as a product of a number between 1 and 9 and a power of 10

1000 = 1.0 x 103

Examples -

Estimated age of the Earth is 4,600,000,000

years.

What is this number in scientific notation?

4.6 x 109 years

Estimated diameter of an atom is 0.00000003 cm
