Scientific Notation
Scientific notation is a short hand way to write numbers (it uses exponents)
Large numbers have positive powers of 10
Example: 9,600,000 = 9.6 x 106
Small numbers have negative powers of 10
Example:
.00049 = 4.9 x 10 -4
Converting to Scientific Notation
Step 1 - Position the decimal point to get a single digit number
Step 2 - Count the number of places the decimal point was moved to get that single digit number
Step 3 - Write the number as a product of a number between 1 and 9 and a power of 10
1000 = 1.0 x 103
Examples -
Estimated age of the Earth is 4,600,000,000
years.
What is this number in scientific notation?
4.6 x 109 years
Examples -
Estimated diameter of an atom is 0.00000003 cm
What is this number in scientific notation?
3.0 x 10 -8 cm
