What was going on?-Context

  • The Second Sino-Japanese war was going on between Japan and China
  • Japan was getting ready for WWII.

Backround 

  • Japanese were waiting for an excuse to invade and occupy China.  In July 1937, an exchange of firing took place near Peking (Beijing) - Google Maps
  • The Japanese eventually were able to take over Peking (Beijing).
  • This was all that Japan needed for a reason to attack China.
  • Not only did the Japanese shoot and stab the Chinese they also buried them alive if they really despised  a person to put them through misery during their death.
  • Chinese resisted Japanese although they were out numbered and ill-prepared.

The Japanese would go into towns and when they leave this is what the survivors would find.

Historical Significance

Why is this event important?

  • It helped trigger WWII because Japan formed an alliance with Germany to help Japan capture China. 
  • Over 300,000 people lost their lives which is 3 times the population of La Crosse and Onalaska combined.

How can it help us today?

  • We can learn from Japan and China on how differences sometimes spark severe hatred and sometimes violence.

Lasting impacts

  • Still to this day Japan and China(neighboring countries) do not get along. With such a bad history with each other it has a lasting impact.

  • Japanese soldiers were told by their officers to find more ways to kill Chinese civilians
  • As a result, they put bayonets on their guns.

  •  209 Chinese victims died from beheading.

  • Today there is a Memorial for all of the victims of the Nanking Massacre located in the Southwest corner of Nanjing.
