Purpose: Update their blog description to match their interests a year older. Distinguish what personal information should/ should not be on their blog.

Introduction of Lesson:

From reading your blog, I was intrigued to know more about you. As writers we’re always thinking how are we going to write - who is our audience?

Writing time and prompts

Let’s read Mrs Sio’s letter.

  • What was in your mind as you read the letter?
  • Did you keep the letter to read again?
  • Did you share your letter with anyone?
  • Did you write back?

  • Remind students to draft a letter, using the sample letter as a model, and the checklist to check that their work is polished.

Assessment: checking if students used the punctuation skills correctly when writing their letters, by checking for commas.

Reflect: what effect does it have on the reader if there are errors in a letter?

Put it all together; (TEACH to copy and paste each section, then proofread it and ensure it makes sense)

Lesson Name: Your Mission

Date: Week 3, Term 1, 2019

Purpose: To have students engage in writing

WALT: Use capitals (sentence, beginnings, Proper nouns), full stops, exclamation marks, and question marks with confidence.

Achievement Objective: Show a developing understanding of how language features are used for effect within and across texts.

By gaining control of text conventions, such as: capital letters and full stops; some basic grammatical conventions; volume, clarity, and tone; and simple symbols. (Lv1)

Introduction of Lesson:

-Remind of our school korero 2019 “Kia pa te kotahi” -using the ‘fortnite’ to set the platform to start writing. By using the 3 P’s how can we work better together to complete the mission.

Writing time and prompts

-By using the template, think of a title for your writing. -Then thinking of who are the characters that are going to be based in your story? - Looking at the setting - Plot - what is going to happen? Sequence of events: B-M-E.

-Conflict & Resolution (what is the issue and how is it resolved?). Include dialogue and details of how you’re feeling.

-Then start writing a plan.

Lesson Name: Blog comment

Date: Week 3, Term 1, 2019

Curriculum Level: 2

Purpose: To have students engage in writing

By gaining control of text conventions, such as: capital letters and full stops; some basic grammatical conventions; volume, clarity, and tone; and simple symbols. (Lv1)

Introduction of Lesson:

Few students were writing incorrect comment blogs. Reminder of expectation when leaving a comment blog

Writing time and prompts

Go over the slide, reinforce ‘positive’ ‘thoughtful’ & ‘helpful’. What does that look like?

-Go over each slide, talk with the students. Watch GI. video about leaving a comment.

-Students’ exercise is to go over friends, class & clusters blog. Leave comment.

Toni was able to demonstrate how to start writing with our low learner writers.

Used a model book, use the blend cards.

Was able to write about ‘blog’ - ask the students what did they think?

  • Talk through each word, what was the sound? Are we able to find it on this blend card? Wrote ¾ of their task & sent them off to complete the task.

Week 4&5- Untie the human knot (RECOUNT)

WALT: use a range of vocabulary in our writing.

WALT: edit our work, checking that we have a range of simple, compound, and/or complex sentences in our writing.�

Monday - Ako 3 (whole space) launch

  • Inside on the mat - get 5 volunteers. Demonstrate how you do the human knot task. Show a couple of times. Talk about how important it is to listen to others in your group (choose a leader). Add vocab to the vocab presentation.
  • Go outside in literacy groups.
  • Join up with 2 friends. Now create a group of 6 (join up with another group). Now create a group of 12. Go outside - in groups of 12, join hands in a random way, ensuring you grab the hand of someone who is NOT next to you. Challenge is to untangle without letting go of anyone’s hand. If a group does it, talk about whether they were being honest or whether someone let go. Did they work well as a team?
  • Back in class, in literacy class, discuss vocab for 5 minutes - add this to the vocab presentation.
  • Turn to your neighbour and talk about it for 2 minutes; tell us what your neighbour said.

Show students the task. Explain that they will be writing a RECOUNT. 20 minutes of silent writing for all of Ako 3 (Note: see how this goes). .

Wednesday - Friday - conference with students in regards to the above WALT. In whole space/ literacy class meetings, refer back to the WALT, the work banks around the space.

By the end of Thursday students should have completed writing and be conferencing with a classmate, editing.

Bring class down to mat to discuss each paragraph at various intervals. Give 20 mins writing, then return to mat etc.

Early Finishers

Encourage a “Funny moments” short writing exercise. It should act as a bit of a reward rather than ‘more writing’ for finishing early.

Week 8- Types of Sentences

WALT understand simple, compound, and complex sentences.

WALT edit our writing, ensuring we have a range of sentence types.

When learners come to see me, they will be finding a piece of writing which they have written this year. In their group, they will be identifying a simple sentence, a compound sentence, and a complex sentence.

  • Discuss the difference between a simple and compound sentence. Use pre-made cards to write out 2 simple sentences (get students to come up with sentences) and demonstrate how you can put them together to create a compound sentence.
  • Discuss a complex sentence. Explain how 1 part of a complex sentence cannot stand alone. It is dependent on the other part of the sentence to make sense.
  • Students to come up with a simple sentence and expand it into a compound sentence and a complex sentence.

Lesson Name: Proofreading and editing

Date: Week 9, Term 1, 2019

Curriculum Level: 2

Purpose: To have students proofreading and edit work

WALT: Use capitals (sentence, beginnings, Proper nouns), full stops, exclamation marks, and question marks with confidence.

Achievement Objective: seeks feedback and makes changes to texts to improve clarity, meaning, and effect

By gaining control of text conventions, such as: capital letters and full stops; some basic grammatical conventions; volume, clarity, and tone; and simple symbols. (Lv1)

Introduction of Lesson:

Over the weekend, got to read our classblog and shocked at how punctuation, capital letters and spelling wasn’t included in their blogging.

Writing time and prompts

-Who can tell me when do you use a capital letter? What punctuations can you use? Spelling - how do we find the correct spelling of the word?

-use of full stops, ensure there is 2 spaces after and capital letter.

  • Read it aloud to see if it makes sense.
  • Find a buddy to read together and check to see
