Linocut

Linocut is a printmaking process where an artist carves a design on a block, then rolls ink over to print it.

Prints can be one color or multiple colors

First, we will learn about how the process works

Ready to get started!

First, transfer your sketch to your block by:

  1. Trace sketch with dark # 2 pencil lines
  2. Lay it image side down
  3. Draw over where the image is in pencil with pressure
  4. Remove your sketch paper. Your image should have transferred, but draw over any areas that didn’t.

To plan for linocut:

  1. Find reference photos for an animal or plant (you will make sketches for two ideas)
  2. Practice sketching the shapes you see, making sure to mark what you will carve away and what will be raised to print
  3. Get the 4x6 paper and draw ONE idea for linocut IN PENCIL. You will transfer this onto your block before you carve.

Next, carve!

  • Get a bench hook and a speedball cutter - there are 3 different sizes
  • Lay your block on the bench hook as seen in these clips
  • Carve carefully, ALWAYS away from yourself
