RADIATION AND NOISE POLLUTION

2 of 19

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY RADIATION ?

  • Radiation is the process by which radiant energy is transferred from one place to another in the form of electro-magnetic waves.
  • The various types of radiation differ from one another by their frequency or wavelength.
  • Higher the frequency of a radiation higher will be the its energy.
  • Again higher the energy of radiation, it will cause higher damage to the living organisms

RADIATION POLLUTION

4 of 19

  • Radiation Pollution is a special form of physical pollution of air, water, and soil with radioactive materials.
  • The radiation pollution is mainly caused by non-ionizing radiation, it will cause higher damage to the living organism. Alpha, beta, gamma are mainly responsible for radiation pollution.
  • Alpha radiation contains energetic alpha particles. Each alpha particle contains 2 units of positive charge and interacts strongly with living tissues.
  • Beta radiation is made up of energetic electrons.
  • Gamma radiation is made up of high energy photons.

SOURCES OF RADIATION POLLUTION

  • NATURAL SOURCE- It includes radioactive minerals, cosmic rays, radioactive nuclides.
  • MAN-MADE SOURCE- Wastes, nuclear exploits includes- nuclear powerplant, radioactive ions and radioactive isotopes

EFFECT OF RADIATION POLLUTION

  • IN HIGHER DOSES IT CAUSES INSTANT DEATH
  • RADIATION CAUSES MUTATION BY BREAKING DNA MOLECULES IN NUCLEUS
  • IT CAUSES SKIN BURNS WHICH LEADS TO CANCER
  • IT CAUSES STERILITY AND DEFECTIVE VISION
  • RADIATION AT PELVIC REGION OF PREGNANT LADIES ,CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE FETUS

CONTROL OF RADIATION POLLUTION

NOISE POLLUTION

  • An unwanted sound dumped into the atmosphere that is undesired by the recipients is called noise pollution.
  • Noise pollution takes place when there is either excessive amount of noise of an unpleasant sound that causes temporary disruption in the natural balance.

CAUSES OF NOISE POLLUTION

  • Industrialization
  • Household chores
  • Poor urban planning
  • Construction activities
  • Transportation
  • Social events

12 of 19

INDUSTRIALIZATION

  • Most of the industries use big machines which are capable of producing large amount of noise

13 of 19

POOR URBAN PLANNING

  • In most of the developing countries poor urban planning also plays a vital role. Congested houses, large families sharing small space, fight over parking leads to noise pollution.

14 of 19

SOCIAL EVENTS

  • Noise is at its peak in most of the social events. whether it is marriage, parties, pub etc flout rules set by the local administration and create nuisance in the area.

15 of 19

TRANSPORTATION

  • Large number of vehicles on roads, aeroplanes flying over houses, underground trains produce heavy noise. It leads to loss of ability to hear properly to the normal people.

16 of 19

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES

  • Under construction activities like mining, construction of bridges ,dams roads etc take place in almost every part of the world. These construction equipments are too noisy.

EFFECTS OF NOISE POLLUTION

  • HEARING PROBLEMS- Any unwanted sound that our ears have not been built to filter can cause the body problems within.
  • HEALTH ISSUES- Studies shows the aggressive behaviors., disturbance of sleep, CONSTANT stress, hyper-tension can be linked to excessive noise level.
  • CARDIOVASCULAR ISSUES- Blood pressure levels, cardiovascular diseases and stress related heart problems are on the rise due to noise pollution.
  • EFFECTS ON WILD LIFE- Wild life faces far more problems than humans. Animals develop a better sense of hearing than us since their survival depends on it.

CONTROL OF NOISE POLLUTION

  • Use of soundproof of insulating jackets to reduce noises from the machines.
  • A silent zone of 100m of hospitals and schools can give comfort to ailing patients or help students to concentrate in their studies
  • Laws should be enforced in cities.
  • Efforts must be made to increase awareness among people about perils of noise in our surrounding.
