Problems in the Church

Quaestiones in Ecclesia

8 of 22

Problem 1:

Rules

Some rules were just confusing.

For example:

Wait a minute… This says I shouldn’t murder people!

Only priests could read the Bible.

all Church activities were to be done in Latin only, even if people didn’t understand it!

. Nam Latine totiusque Ecclesiae fierent opera, etsi populus non intellegant

Exspecta paulisper ... Hoc dicit ne caedem hominum

Quaestio I.

Praecepta

Quaedam praecipimus ultra Paulo turbatio

Problem 2: Money

  • Pope Leo X spent tons of the church’s money on his own entertainment.
  • He came up with new ways to make money from the people like letting people pay to become priests.

I don’t know what this says but I’m sure it’s important!

Leo X talentorum ecclesiae pecuniam sua hospitii impenditur.

Venit novas vias populus, pecuniam a populo sacerdotiorum dimittit.

Quaestio II:

Pecunia

Sed certe nescio quid dicit gravis!

Indulgences

To raise money the church sold passes to get into Heaven more quickly.

You could buy them before you sinned or even for people who already died.

Heaven? No problem! That’ll be 5 dollars.

Caelum? Non forsit! Quod erit vobis luce V pupa.

Problem 3:

Behavior

The church in Spain kicked all non-Christians out of the country completely. (see fig. 1)

Made a court called The Inquisition for religious crimes.

They used torture to “save” people from going against the church.

Spain Non- Christian

Fig. 1

Ecclesia non christianos omnes calce Hispania prorsus expelleret extra regionem. (videre Fig. I)

Fecit a curia vocatur Inquisitionis religiosis flagitium aliis obiectantes.

Solebant torquent "nisi"

ab ecclesia contra.

Quaestio III:

Inquisitionis

12 of 22

  • People were tortured until they gave in and changed their mind.
  • If they would not give in they could be burned at the stake.
  • This was all in the name of God.

Martin Luther

Martini Lutheri

17 of 22

Became a monk after God saved him in a storm.

18 of 22

Visited Rome early in his career to see the true church.

He saw other priests acting sinfully and began to doubt church teachings.

Began to believe the church could not provide salvation.

Then how can we be saved?

What do you think Martin Luther did after returning from Rome?

21 of 22

Luther’s Beliefs

  • “For it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God –
  • not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
  • Grace (noun) Divine (Godly) love and protection bestowed (given) freely on people.

Opiniones Lutheri

"Ex gratia enim estis salvati per fidem, - et hoc non ex vobis Dei enim donum est -

non ex operibus, ut ne quis glorietur. "Ad Ephesios II: 8-9

Et quis potest dimittere peccata nisi solus Deus, quia discordia Indulgentiis, non homo.

22 of 22

He disagreed with indulgences because only God can forgive sins, not man.

To Luther, the Bible was the only source of God’s thoughts.

If something wasn’t in the Bible, it shouldn’t be in the church.

He risked excommunication and even death.

Secundum Lutherum Scriptura Dei erat sola cogitatio.
