Purpose (at Calvin)

  • Allows teachers and students to send the images on their Chromebook to their projector
    • Presentations
    • Documents
    • YouTube Videos
    • ANYTHING on your Chrome tab!
  • You can also share from an Android phone, tablet, iPhone, iPad, Mac or Windows laptop
  • Chromecast works with a growing number of apps, including Netflix, HBO GO, YouTube, WatchESPN & Pandora.

How To Use Chromecast

  1. Turn your projector on
    • The Chromecast network will not show up if the projector is not on.
  2. Select the projector HDMI 1 input (the one the Chromecast is connected to)
    • Chromecast background images, Chromecast name, and time should be displayed (see next slide)
  3. Click the Chromecast icon
  4. Select your Chromecast

Selecting the Correct Chromecast

  • If other teachers have their projectors turned on, then you and the students will see their Chromecast as one of the options for casting
    • Be careful to always cast to the correct Chromecast device! It will be named with the room number and the teacher name.

Possible Uses

  • Cast a Google Slides presentation to your class from your Chromebook
  • Send a YouTube video to your projector from your Chromebook
  • Have a student display their paper for the class, then have others make comments
  • Play music in your classroom via your projector speakers using Google Music on your Chromebook

Important Info

  • The Chromecast extension is automatically installed on all Calvin-owned Chromebooks
  • Students cannot cast from their personal devices, and you cannot currently cast from your PC
    • The device must be connected to the CCS Chromebook network to cast
  • Chromecast access is “last come, first served”
    • i.e., if Tom is already casting, and Jane tries to cast, Jane’s cast will be displayed.
  • Mouse movement is NOT displayed when casting a tab
