A Commitment to Workplace Safety

Montecito Union School District is committed to the safety and welfare of our employees and affiliated individuals.

Montecito Union School District has plans in place to direct our efforts to foster safety from illness and injury while in our work settings.

The annual training modules include one on Workplace violence prevention and is an annual requirement for all employees to refresh their memory on this important topic.

What is workplace violence?

A “Threat of violence”

Verbal or written statement(s) not limited to:

  • Texts
  • Electronic messages
  • Social media messages
  • Other online posts
  • Any behavioral or physical conduct, that conveys an intent, or that is reasonably perceived to convey an intent, to cause physical harm or to place someone in fear of physical harm, and that serves no legitimate purpose.

“Workplace violence”

Act of violence or threat of violence in the workplace not limited to:

  • Threat or use of physical force against an employee that results in, or has a high likelihood of resulting in, injury, psychological trauma, or stress, regardless of sustained injury.
  • Incident involving a threat or use of a firearm or other dangerous weapon, including the use of common objects as weapons, regardless of sustained injury.

“Workplace violence” does not include lawful acts of self-defense or defense of others.

What is workplace violence?

The law identifies four types of workplace violence:

Self-defense is not workplace violence.

Committed by a person who has no legitimate business at worksite; includes violent acts by anyone who enters workplace or approaches workers with intent to commit a crime

Directed at employees by customers, clients, students, or visitors

Against an employee by a present or former employee, supervisor, or manager

Committed in workplace by person who does not work there but has or is known to have had a personal relationship with an employee

Response to reports

of workplace violence

  1. Preliminary inquiry of the report to determine if a formal investigation is needed.
  2. Written notification of outcomes and, if applicable, corrective actions upon conclusion of investigation.
  3. Documentation of workplace violence reports on the Montecito Union School District Violence Report Log.
  4. Compliance with written records requests related to workplace violence prevention.
  5. Encouragement that employees utilize confidential employee assistance program(s) or other mental health supports available as needed.

Montecito Union School District encourages all employees to take steps to keep themselves safe:
