A Message from Our Principal Zeina Jebril...

We’ve had a great first semester and I’m eager for the great things we have planned for 2024!

I had my first Principal Student Advisory Council meeting at DHS in November. The goal of the PSAC is to provide leadership opportunities for 10th, 11th and 12th grade students with a focus on community service, social issues that impact their education, and overall school related concerns. Another goal is to foster learning that develops student leaders who are empathetic, kind and compassionate. I recognize the importance of student leadership and will be working with students to make our school a kind, student friendly, and safe place to learn with student input and feedback.

Second semester begins once we return from winter break and I would like to stress the importance of monitoring your student’s grades and attendance by getting a ParentConnect account and checking it frequently. If you need assistance with this, please call the office and we can get that set up for you. Teachers also use Schoology to post assignments that students can access from home.

As far as school news, I usually send a weekly email outlining school events and reminders. If you have not been receiving these emails, please call the office to update the email address we have on file for you. You can also subscribe to our school website at https://dhs.dearbornschools.org/ to receive emails that will help you stay up to date. As well, you will find a list of staff members that you can contact to help support your child.

We stress the importance of student attendance at DHS, please ensure that your child is in school everyday. Students missing 10 days or more, take the risk of losing credit in their class. If your child must miss a school day, please call the attendance line to report their absence. By the same token, if you need to have them leave early, call the attendance office and we will document and call them out for you. We ask that you refrain from calling your child’s cell phone to call them out.

I strongly believe in partnership between home and school. It truly takes a village to educate and raise our children. My staff and I welcome you and your communication in any way that works for you. We have an open door policy and are always willing to engage in dialogue to help meet the needs of our students.

In partnership,

Zeina Jebril, Ed.S.

Hello Pioneer Family,

I’m Lena Abdrabbah and I am very honored to be the new assistant principal at Dearborn High School. This year begins my 15th year in education, and my first as an Assistant Principal. I have been part of the Pioneer family for eight years, serving primarily as the Biology/AP Biology teacher.

My career in education began as a Middle School Science teacher at a private school for seven years. This was where I learned to spark the love of Science into young minds and cultivate the love of learning and the awe and wonder of Science. In 2015, I was blessed to be part of the Pioneer family, and had a wonderful experience teaching a variety of science courses such as Physics, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology and AP Biology.

I have enjoyed working with the Dearborn High community as a teacher, and I am thrilled to do the same as the Assistant Principal. I am also blessed to be part of a great team with Principal Jebril, Mrs. Ball, and Mr. Beydoun.

Students who know me know that I am very passionate about education and learning. I look forward to continue fostering meaningful relationships with staff, student and families. My door is always open, and I warmly welcome your ideas, questions and feedback. I look forward to a great year ahead!

Mrs. Abdrabbah

Dearborn High School will be focusing on our PIONEER 6 second semester. The Pioneer 6 includes: Accountability, Communication, Empathy, Mindfulness, Motivation, and Critical Thinking. In January our 1st Pioneer 6 is Mindfulness.

Mindfulness is the act of being present and being intentional with our attention. When we are mindful we notice what is happening in and around us, so that we can learn to accept and manage our experience, instead of allowing our thoughts and emotions to run the show.

Scientists have found that when you live in the moment-that is, get 'out of your head' and focus on your surroundings instead of being wrapped in your thoughts-you will usually feel happier and feel less stress. With enough practice, you will also learn to better manage your thoughts and feelings, so that you are in control of them rather than them being in control of you!

Mindfulness Skills-Practicing these mindfulness skills can help us remain in the moment and more effectively notice, acknowledge and accept our emotions and the situation around us.

  • Do one thing at a time-When you are eating, eat. When you are walking, walk. When you are dancing, dance and when you are worrying, worry. During this time, notice how you are feeling and what is going on around you.

  • Fully participate in what you are doing. Notice thoughts/feelings that may be distracting from the situation and throw yourself completely into the experience.

  • Practice being non-judgemental-Notice yourself, others, and the experience itself and try not to evaluate as good or bad; just acknowledge the facts if you find yourself judging (yourself, another or the experience), notice and acknowledge your judgment and re-focus on observing the facts of the current experience.

  • Practice being kind and compassionate toward yourself.

If you find yourself judging yourself harshly or unkindly, turn your mind towards self-acceptance and self-kindness.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC IS A GREAT EXPERIENCE!

  • DHS has award-winning music ensembles
  • DHS prepares kids to pursue music at the university level – every year Pioneers make it into university marching bands or are studying music at a higher level.
  • You can still take the classes you want AND be in band/orchestra (music = language credit, two years of marching band = gym credit)
  • Membership in BABC offers music scholarships and offsets costs of lessons, band camp, organizes social activities (Homecoming Tailgate, Pool party, field trips), and more!

TAKE NOTE!

BABC is the place to be!
