Valerie Songhee Cho
Biology
Whether it is continuing higher education in the biological sciences or entering the healthcare industry, I believe my undergraduate experience has equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue either track. I will miss all the memories that I’ve made at OXY whether it be through courses, clubs, or through the people that I have met. The past four years allowed me to grow academically and personally, all while allowing me to discover new talents and passions in myself.
Valerie Cho is an outstanding young scholar with a keen analytical mind that makes creative connections across areas of scientific knowledge with ease. She is also a humane and perceptive person with a wonderful capacity to extend empathy and friendship to others. With much anticipation, I look forward to her scientific accomplish-ments in the coming years.

Preston Chong
Economics & Mathematics
Looking back at my time at Oxy, I appreciate the accessibility and willingness to help of my Professors who made my time here special. But most of all, I will cherish the memories made with my teammates on the baseball field. Upon graduation I will be moving to San Francisco to work as an Investment Banking Analyst for J.P. Morgan in their Mergers & Acquisitions group.
Preston exhibits an impressive combination of academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and excitement for learning. He excelled in a wide range of challenging courses, not only double majoring in economics and mathematics, but taking more economics classes than required. His economics honors thesis on the impact of financial literacy education similarly demonstrates his commitment to thinking deeply about important social problems.

Philosophy
I am applying to jobs in the environmental communications field and am hoping to pursue that work in Montana. I am grateful for the freedom Oxy affords students to pursue both humanities and STEM studies — and especially want to express thanks for my professors and peers who are such exemplars of how connection across different fields makes us all better.
Kayla is her own, exceptional person – curious and creative, grounded in what really matters, and up for adventure. One of my favorite philosophical interlocutors, her enthusiasm and commitment encourages those around her to become not only better thinkers, but better people. Her path is one of love and learning, and I am happy to have traveled this bit with her!

Angelina Lee
Media Arts and Culture
I'm grateful for having had the chance to closely study media production, theory, and history at Occidental. I plan to work as a filmmaker who focuses on environmental issues through fiction as well as documentary, especially food waste and potential solutions. I will definitely miss countless people at Occidental, whose constant involvement in their passions is endlessly inspiring.
Angelina is one of the brightest, kindest students I've known. Her interdisciplinarity, and her ability to find original connec-tions and intersections across disparate fields, is extraordinary. In an era of climate crisis and social fragmentation, where our belief systems and behaviors are increasingly constructed through media, I am incredibly excited that Angelina is actively exploring and advancing ways to use her media studies skills towards building communities and promoting sustainability.

Jack Leonard
Chemistry
In the fall, I plan to start at University of California, Irvine to pursue a PhD in chemistry with a specialty in chemical biology. While I am excited to begin that journey, I will miss the kind and supportive Oxy community, especially in the chemistry and UEP departments, as well as the Writing Center. It is my professors, peers, and friends that have made my time at Oxy both fruitful and enjoyable.
Jack Leonard is an outstanding student, a tremendous researcher, and an exceptional individual. He graduates with a perfect academic record, has two scientific papers submitted for publication, and his work has been profiled in Science Magazine, and written about by the BBC. We in Chemistry are incredibly proud and know there are great things in store for Jack.

Biology
My current career goal is to become a biology professor at a college due to my combined interest in research and teaching. The experience I gained at Oxy helped me reflect on the broader impacts of science and how scientists can bring about social change through outreach. My mission is to contribute to advancing knowledge in biology through research in addition to bridging the gap that exists between scientists and the general public through education.
Joe Shiina is a dual citizen of Japan and the U.S., but he also inhabits other, larger worlds: among them, the worlds of intellectual truth, physical grace, scientific exploration, and inclusive excellence. Driven by the need to improve the lives of people close to him and beyond, Joe has made the last four years better for all who have known him.

I'm currently working remotely in San Diego as an account manager for a recruitment advertising software company. My dream and true passion in life is to become an entrepreneur and start my own business. What I will miss about Oxy is the people. I've formed some of my closest friendships at Oxy, and have also developed unbelievably rewarding relationships with professors and faculty. The ability to easily interact and engage with anyone on a small campus is truly amazing and will be sorely missed.
Ben is an exceptional student who has not only excelled in each of three challenging courses he took with me, but who has a strong record of community service. I am impressed by his analytical mind, creative problem solving, and kindness. I wish him the best in his post-Oxy career and know he will thrive in any path he chooses.

I was just awarded a Fulbright to Costa Rica where I will be assisting English teachers at local universities and conducting linguistic research. What I will value/miss most about my Oxy experience: The friendships I made - hanging out with friends, playing pickup soccer, chatting on the quad, or eating lunch on the MP patio, and I wouldn't change a thing! I am also very grateful for the relationships I have made with Prof. Bolyanatz and Prof. Chase. Their mentorship, advice, and support over the last 4 years have been extremely formative for me.
Noah is one of the best and brightest students I have worked with in my 5 years at Oxy. He is hardworking, fun, and humble, and thoughtfully integrates his own personal experiences as well as his training at Oxy in Spanish, Linguistics, and DWA into his myriad interests and projects. Noah, muy sinceramente, it’s been an absolute honor to be your professor, your SRP mentor, your comps advisor, y ojalá, your friend. You will be an outstanding Fulbrighter to Costa Rica next year! Congratulations!

After graduation, I will continue to pursue a career in dentistry. I really value Occidental's interdisciplinary and multicultural approach to teaching and learning. I love that I was able to major in Economics, complete my dental school prerequisites, and still take electives in other departments that I am interested in. These experiences have taught me to navigate the world more holistically and critically.

Annie is a wonderful student and a fantastic human being. Annie brings earnest curiosity and enthusiasm to every subject—she pushes to understand hard concepts and to connect theory to the real world. Her desire to understand important problems and to help others has shined through every time I talk to her.

Theater
I am planning to move to San Francisco this fall to return to my position as a software engineer at Twitter. I hope to continue my passion for acting and theater as well. One of the things I valued most about Occidental was the expertise, passion, and care from my professors. I have been so honored to learn from some incredible computer scientists, theater artists, art historians and more, each of them dedicated not only to their areas of study but to the growth and wellbeing of their students.
Olivia V. Baldwin is an impressive creative who embodies both artistic and intellectual excellence. Her work as the tyrannical Richard III in the adaptation “Seize the King” was both linguistically advanced and surprisingly, quite empathetic. Her accompanying senior comps paper was equally bold and sophisticated. I’ve had many students in many years of teaching – and without a doubt Olivia, or “V” as she is known by, is one of the most driven and talented students I’ve ever worked with.

Jenna Beales
Critical Theory and Social Justice
I will be pursuing a Master's in Philosophy at the New School for Social Research in New York next fall. From my time at Oxy, I will most remember how being invested in various classes, clubs, jobs, and organizations mattered to the success of those orgs, pushed me to grow, and also strengthened my friendships.
Congratulations to Jenna Beales for her induction into Phi Beta Kappa. Jenna is a natural and creative scholar. She has an intuitive intelligence, capable of seeing complex ideas in a glance. She gravitates towards the deep and foundational questions of human life, approaching them in the expansive spirit of the liberal arts, in a way that captures the purpose and promise of the idea of the humanities. Best wishes on your life's journey, Jenna.

Joshua Brown
Chemistry & Economics
I will be joining Cambridge Associates as a financial analyst. Throughout my college education, I benefited from being able to conduct research in the chemistry department, and I’m excited to be able to work with endowments like Occidental College to ensure college students in the future are able to benefit from similar experiences. Looking back, I’m truly thankful for the personal connections and guidance that the professors at this school have provided.
Josh is an amazing individual, has a great outlook in life, and always pushed himself (and this professor) to look beyond the course material. No other student has challenged me to work harder to ensure that I could answer all of his questions in class. He is also brilliant, strong, and an overall great person to know. The last two years have been really tough, but Josh is the type of student that comes out stronger after adversity. Keep your eyes open and see all that Josh will accomplish.

Percy Byron
Comparative Studies in Literature & Culture
The whirlwind of words I have encountered in this academic realm has endowed me with an enduring cultural lexicon beyond my most vivid imaginings, and shaped an even brighter reality for my future. The world has opened gloriously before me. Participating as a Teacher’s Assistant for Professor Damian Stocking’s “Feeling and Form: Literature and its Lifeworlds” course instilled in me a passion for hosting reading groups. As I wish to become an educator of poetry, I must end with this: I intend to return to Occidental to continue such an excellent legacy.
Percy Byron is an inspiration-- a student of awe-inspiring insight who yet never let himself slip into the communication of mere intellectual profundities, but instead pushed himself relentlessly to the limits of what language could do. To read him is to enter the delirium of the word, the transhumanizing transport of the excess of meaning, and the meaning of excess. Percy's work shows us there is more to us than we have dreamt of in our philosophy, for which we owe him our deepest thanks.

I will be interning and studying in Barcelona. After a summer of eating tapas and traveling through Europe, I will return to LA to pursue a graduate degree in Public Relations and Advertising at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. What I will cherish most about Oxy is the faculty and staff who have championed me every step of the way; my success is simply a reflection of their support, guidance, and kindness.
Jacqueline is a passionate student of languages. She has dedicated her time at Oxy to studying Spanish, French, Chinese, and linguistics. In my years at the College, I have met few students with such serious dedication to their studies, while maintaining such a cheerful, friendly attitude about life. Best wishes for grad school and the future, Jacqueline!

Noa Carlson
Biology & Theater
I am going to Montana State University for a 10-week research program studying 'Microbiology in Low Ecosystems,' specifically biofilms! After the summer, I plan to immerse myself in theater through stage management apprenticeships and/or being a Resident Artist in a theater company. My hope is that through immersing myself in both of my academic interests, I will find a career path that I feel passionate about pursuing.
Noa is an innovative, highly intuitive and intellectually robust student who combines academic rigor with artistic sophistication in ways rarely seen in the academy. Her work as a participant in both my Acting 2 class and the advanced THEA 410 course was expressively effective in the creation of engaging works of art. Her skills as a researcher and analytical thinker in the completion of her comps’ supplementary paper was also of the highest quality. Noa is a leader amongst her peers.

I am so grateful for all of the amazing professors and friends I made during my time in Eagle Rock. After graduation, I will attend the London School of Economics to study for a Master's in Political Theory and attend law school thereafter. Ultimately, I hope to practice or teach constitutional law.
Matthew Chopp is a History major and Politics minor who embodies academic excellence and achievement as well as authentic and noble character. During his time at Occidental, Matt thrived as a research fellow, published author, and Writing Adviser. I look forward to Matt’s expansion of his distinguished academic record in graduate school and brilliant contributions to legal scholarship in his career. Congratulations!

Deirdre Ellis
Art and Art History
After graduation, I will be starting my postgraduate studies in Museum Object Conservation at Cardiff University in Wales. The thing I will remember most about my experience at Occidental will be the unwavering support of my professors. There was never a moment where I felt like a class, major path, or application was out of reach, and their support has given me the confidence to pursue further studies.
Deirdre has dedicated herself to studying art history, chemistry, and studio art to enter the field of art conservation. Thanks to her tireless work, she was accepted to the competitive Conservation Practice program at Cardiff University. Her inspiring comps paper, which investigates a groundbreaking project to conserve a Renaissance sculpture, marks the beginning of a promising career as a conservator

Sophie Engle
Comparative Studies in Literature & Culture
I aim to pursue a graduate degree in the field of German studies or German literature, for which my work at Occidental has prepared me very well. My experience at Oxy has laid the groundwork for me to explore what feels like an unending sea of opportunities. I have learned a wide variety of interesting things, from the mineral composition of granite, to the parts of a complex sentence in Ancient Greek. I have met incredible peers and mentors, and most importantly, learned so much about who I am and the never ending process of becoming
Over the course of her Oxy career, Sophie has dedicated herself to the life of the mind, cultivating her thinking by engaging with the likes of Nietzsche, Marx, Kafka, Freud and Heidegger, and doing so in the original German. The results have been impressive. Sophie is not only an insightful, intelligent, and creative thinker with deep knowledge of German literature and philosophy, but she has taken the existential challenge seriously, committing herself to the question of the meaning of being.

Lily Fisher
Cognitive Science
I hope to attend grad school in the future with a focus in clinical child psychology. What I've valued most during my time at Oxy has been the breadth of my educational experience--I've been able to take classes in so many different departments, and it's really helped to shape my worldview and improve my critical thinking skills. I've also loved being able to live in Los Angeles and experience all that it has to offer!
Lily was an outstanding contributor from her first semester in Cog Sci 101 through her stellar work as TA this semester. She has a deep interest in and understanding of the human experience as enacted by the brain. Oxy is a better place because of her research on student belonging. I know she’ll continue to make her mark beyond Oxy!
- Carmel Levitan, Cognitive Science
Elizabeth Frissell
Philosphy & Cognitive Science
After graduation, I plan to attend the University of Nottingham's Masters in Philosophy program, and subsequently enroll for a PhD. What I value most about my experience at Occidental was being able to work one-on-one with professors on research projects and independent studies in both the sciences and humanities.
I first met Liz when she was a first-year enrolled in Marx, Nietzsche and Freud. Liz's deep and sustained engagement with philosophy and intellectual history has helped her develop into a sharp, analytically astute thinker who approaches topics with the clarity of historical perspective. Most impressive, however, has been her commitment to cultivating wisdom, engaging with philosophy not just theoretically, but rather, as the stoics would have wished, in pursuit of living a good life.

Ellie Furth
Economics
I graduated from Oxy in December and currently live in Boise, ID. I work as a Project Accountant for Engineered Structures, Inc. (ESI) and hope to go on to earn my Masters in Finance. I will always be thankful for the community of intentional and compassionate friends, professors, and coaches I had the privilege of meeting at Oxy. It was an incredible place to continuing growing as a young woman.
Ellie is a top econ student, and has my vote for the most helpful student during online learning (she knows why!). Ellie showed an amazing trajectory while at Oxy, and really showed her full potential in the senior seminar: She was a great partner, an amazing writer, an excellent presenter, and an expert test taker. She has that personality that makes you just cheer her on! She will accomplish all she sets out to do and will maximize her utility figuratively, literally, and mathematically.

Sherry Gao
Music & Economics
In the future, I wish to be someone who cares about the society and the world we live in, and to be able to apply the critical mind and knowledge I obtained during my time at oxy to achieve my goals in career and in life. The thing I would remember the most about oxy is the wonderful faculties I studied with, who have always been encouraging and accessible and helped me learn and grow as a student.
It’s hard to excel in a small class that includes five Phi Beta Kappa initiates, but Sherry did exactly that. Her analytical and writing skills are terrific, and she impressed me by often volunteering to argue difficult positions, holding her own against strong counter-arguments. I’m confident that she’ll be successful at whatever she chooses to do in the future.

Hyun Young Gill
Music & Biochemistry
Through my experience at Oxy, I learned the value of connecting with like-minded people. I would not be where I am today without the support and love from everyone who accepted me for who I am. I am still debating if I want to go to med school or get a PhD, but whatever I choose to do, I know that I will be supported by everyone I connected with at Oxy, and that I will meet more like-minded people who will welcome me.
Hyun was an exceptional student in my general chemistry lecture, and since that class I have had the pleasure of sharing many meals and fun conversations with her. I have so enjoyed listening to her many outstanding performances on the viola. In addition to her intellectual and musical gifts, she embodies grit, a combination of passion and perseverance I admire so much. She has been a major contributor to the best parts of the last four years, and I am thankful for the memories!

Gus Grunau
Philosphy & Cognitive Science
I hope to go into the publishing field. I'm interested in both academic and trade publishing companies. I want to find a job that allows me to improve as a writer and a critical thinker. During my time at Oxy, I've valued the professors in the History Department. They've helped me analyze and write about the world from different angles. I'm very grateful for their support over the past four years.

Gus was certainly born with a sharp mind, but the effort he has made to develop his considerable talents really stands out. The result is manifest in his sophisticated and mature intellect. It was a great privilege to advise him on the best senior thesis that I have read in my two decades of college teaching.

James Henderson
Biochemistry
I am very grateful for all the opportunities my time at Occidental has afforded me. I will certainly miss many things at Oxy, especially my friends, my professors, and the Green Bean. My experience at Oxy has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I will cherish it for many years to come. After graduation, I intend to work in management consulting prior to applying for medical school.
James came to Oxy with an interest in STEM and a goal of entering medicine, but while here, he learned to love the process, detail and intricacy of biology. James is ambitious and curious about science and of life, and will be a life-long scientist, no matter which career path he chooses.

Jada Ho
Urban and Environmental Polisty
After Oxy, I plan to slow down for a few months and continue my research in municipal finance. I will always cherish the people that made my time here wonderful - my professors, various staff, classmates, and friends. With tasty food on campus and off, over the past few years I've truly gotten to enjoy good food with good company.
Jada embodies the outstanding liberal arts student: very bright, well-rounded, studious, a problem solver, and successful. She is an exemplary teaching assistant for Urban Data Analysis and a top-notch researcher on multiple research projects. Jada's comps project on Municipal Fiscal Reserves received departmental honors for going above and beyond requirements, its interdisciplinarity, and its methodological strength.

Linda Hussein
Economics
After graduation, I will be taking all the skills I learned at Oxy to NYC where I will be working in finance. Beyond this first post-grad job, I hope to start my own business at some point in the future. The community of friends and professors I've met here at Oxy is something I'll take with me wherever I end up!
I met Linda while she visited Oxy, and I knew then that she was going to be a top student. No high school student will be able to surpass the impression she left on me that day; Oxy (and econ) is lucky to have her. Linda has always been a model student (except that one time, ask her about it) and has an extremely bright future ahead. On paper, I am Linda’s advisor, but she’s always been a step ahead of everyone and all I can really be is just her biggest cheerleader and supporter. Go, Linda, go!

Petra Jasper
Diplomacy and World Affairs
I will be doing a short study abroad in the Netherlands in the summer of 2022 to study sex work, human trafficking and modern slavery in Europe. Afterwards, I will be attending University College of London to get a Masters degree in Gender, Society and Representation. One thing I will remember most about Oxy's academics is the community of support I received. Studying at Oxy felt like a collaborative effort in which every person can learn something new from another.
I’m thrilled to recognize Petra for this well-deserved honor. She’s been an outstanding student in DWA and represented the best of Oxy at the UN. She’s also one of the most cheerful, motivated, and resilient students I’ve ever known. It’s been a genuine privilege to work with her and I’m looking forward to following her exciting accomplishments to come!

Brenna Knapp
Kinesiology
In the future I plan to work as a physical therapist and the biggest thing I value most and will remember most about my experience at Occidental is the relationships I’ve been able to form with the faculty, my peers, and my teammates.
Brenna is a diligent student athlete and researcher who has left a lasting positive impact on peers, faculty and community members through meaningful collaborative work and empathetic leadership. Her deep understanding of exercise science topics combined with her persistence and optimism in the face of challenge will guarantee her a successful and productive future in physical therapy. Congratulations Brenna!

Julia Koh
Economics
What I value most about my Oxy experience is the faculty in my department. Without their support in and out of the classroom, I’m sure I would not have been able to enjoy economics as much as I do now and graduate in 3 years. After Occidental, I will be working full-time at a business management firm that assists clients in music, television, film, and sports. I hope to eventually go back to school to earn my Masters in economics or accounting.
Four words that describe Julia: hardworking, artistic, responsible, unique. This top economics student is also an amazing illustrator and has an impeccable sense of fashion. I feel honored to have Julia open up to me, I loved all our various discussions (eg, see aphantasia discussion), and I really enjoyed all the tea sessions between work-on-site meetings. Lastly, this is the student that has given me the best anime recommendations; it's not even close. Thank you, bestie :)

Ashley Lam
Chemistry
I plan to perform research on energy storage materials and devices. My journey in this field started in Professor Hill's lab, and it has turned into a passion for me. This summer, I am interning at NASA Langley research center researching this very topic and I am very excited to see what more I can discover about such promising solutions for a sustainable future.
Ashley Lam absolutely excelled during her time at Occidental, completing the extremely difficult 3/2 program and earning admission to Columbia University’s engineering program, all while carrying out research in chemistry for three years, including during the lock-down time of the pandemic. But as impressive as her academics are, she is an even better person—kind, gracious, and empathetic. We are truly honored to have had her in our Department.

Amanda Liu
Art and Art History
I plan to work until I am able to get a degree in psychology and pursue art therapy. My goal in life is to help people, and I feel that with all that I have learned at oxy I have the tools necessary to do so. I greatly value what I have learned at Oxy as it has changed my perspective on the world and prompted me to think critically about our society. I will also never forget the professors who guided me along the way and their passion for their respective fields.
Amanda is a creative, talented artist and an affable, assiduous student. Her Studio Art Honors Project sensitively explores her family’s experience of immigrating to America. Amanda will continue to inspire others with her unflagging intellectual curiosity, her constant drive to challenge herself, and her incessant passion for art and culture.

Kevin Lord
Biochemistry
My future plan is to become a doctor of medicine. I am currently in the process of studying for the MCAT and will begin the application process next year. The experiences I value the most at Occidental College are the closeness of the relationships I have built with my friends and professors, the small and inclusive community I have become a part of, and the invaluable research experiences I've gained during my time in the Okumura lab.

I never have to worry about Kevin. He has high integrity, ethics and standards of excellence for himself, but he also extends that care to others, as demonstrated while training our new generation of lab members. It has been a joy to see his growth as a scholar, as a researcher and as a peer mentor.

Ava Lubetkin
Cognitive Science & Philosophy
After graduation, I'm excited to travel and hopefully visit some of the places I had planned to go abroad pre-covid. I most highly value the relationships I've built at Oxy. I'll really miss having a community of my best friends, professors I admire, and rugby family so close to me.
Ava is the very best of Oxy. She is creative and concerned for the common good, and she embraces learning with others. A true student of the liberal arts, she has excelled in the arts, sciences, and humanities, and has flourished through research in both philosophy and cognitive science by integrating insights from across these different ways of knowing.

Siena Lucido
Cognitive Science & Group Language
I plan to continue to search for a job in the realm of language and linguistics. I would like to pursue teaching English abroad in future, possibly in France. There are many things I value and will remember from my time at Oxy, but a couple of things that stand out to me are my time on the swim team and the support of the language department throughout my four years.
Siena is a dedicated, motivated, and intellectually curious student. Her curiosity and thirst for exploration led her to develop excellent proficiency in French, fostered via the French classes at Oxy and a study abroad experience in France during the pandemic, culminating in a fascinating comps project on the French word game of verlan. Siena, you are well-prepared for whatever you choose to do next, and I'm honored to have accompanied you along your journey! Congratulations!

Claire Luethe
Chemistry
I'm excited to combine the skills I developed in Dr. Cannon's lab with my experience as a Writing Adviser to further accessible and effective science communication. I've really appreciated the supportive atmosphere of professors and students alike-- every time I told someone about something I was thinking of doing, from essay topics to assignments for an art class to applying for programs after graduation, the answer was always "Cool, go for it!" I hope to carry that same sense of positivity and determination with me as I move on with life after Oxy.
In her three years working in the Writing Center, Claire has proven her ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff. She is diligent, kind, and thoughtful, and is one of our most sought-after advisers because of her empathetic listening and communication skills. Claire strengthened the college’s writing program by creating a bridge between scientific and writing knowledge, which shows the flexibility of her intellectual achievements. We will miss you in the WC, Claire!

I will be forever grateful to Oxy for the supportive and empowering community that encouraged me to delve deeper into my passions for international relations, peacebuilding, and community empowerment. The opportunities to build human-to-human connections and actively engage in local and global issues offered by the Liberal Arts education in a multicultural city like Los Angeles are incomparable. From Dance Production and Comparte to partnerships for truth and accountability with the L.A. Mayor's Office, my experience at Oxy has been special thanks to every member of our community.
Alejo is certainly one of the top students I have had in my 17 years of teaching at Oxy. He is a passionate, sharp, young scholar and his work will undoubtedly move the field of peace and conflict resolution forward. He is the true embodiment of Oxy’s mission and I am honored to have been a part of his intellectual journey.

Matt Major
Comparative Studies in Literature
and Culture
I am planning a career in academia to continue my research in the intersection of psychoanalytic theory and literary studies. I value most the intellectual community I found both in my department of Comparative Studies in Literature and Culture, and the broader Occidental community as a whole. I have made friendships and connections that I hope will last a lifetime, all of which are founded on a shared sense of curiosity and an attunement of openness towards and with the world.
It is not sufficient to say that Matt Major is the most impressively intelligent student I have ever taught; for his work aims at far more than mere cleverness. To read Matt's work, as scintillating in its insight as devastating in its humor, is to achieve a kind of wisdom, a sharp-eyed, yet compassionate understanding of what we are to one another, what we owe one another, and what we may yet be for to another. To share in his work and conversation has been the privilege of a lifetime.

Lulu Maxfield
Critical Theory and Social Justice
& Music
In the future, I hope to work towards my long-term goal of easing the lives of queer youth by entering non-profit legal work. In my time at Oxy, I most value having been able to build my own unique path to success with professors dedicated to my personal development and where I was able to grow both as an academic and as a person.

Lulu has been in the Oxy Glee Club for 4 years, and has been Glee Club Manager for 3 years. In this capacity, Lulu and I worked very closely together; they are smart, reliable, discreet, and thoughtful. Lulu's communication skills always impress me. I am also impressed by their ability to assess any difficult situation and find a creative solution. I am inspired by Lulu’s ambition, persistence, intelligence, and keen desire to learn, and I know they will be a consequential person in this world!

Oona Milliken
History
I am looking to eventually go to law school. I am interested in social justice, public interest law, as well as international law. My experience at Occidental has been too short, but I feel like this school has allowed me to become a well-rounded, curious and compassionate individual.
Oona Milliken distinguished herself as an exceptional History student, where she completed an outstanding Senior Comprehensive project examining the segregation of public parks in Louisville, Kentucky. Her original contributions to our understanding of environmental racism and, simultaneously, the bold struggle by African Americans for access to accessible green urban space reflect her diligence, research skills, and commitment to social justice.

Jack Moeller
Economics
At Oxy, I had the unique opportunity to combine a strong liberal arts education with collegiate golf. I would like to personally thank my professors, my Coach Will Morris, my teammates, and my parents for their help along the way. After graduation, I will work for a CPA firm based in San Francisco. I look forward to keeping in touch with my friends and teammates in the future.
Jack exemplifies academic excellence. In 2020, Jack received the Outstanding Junior Award from the Economics Department, presented to the top three juniors in the program. Jack’s intellectual curiosity and the quality of his work continually impressed me in my classes. And I was as much impressed by Jack’s character and work ethics as by his achievements. Congratulations, this distinction is incredibly well deserved!

Kai Morfin
Philosophy & Theater
This summer I am working with Occidental Children’s Theater where I will be performing energetic folktales for local families and teaching an acting summer camp for children. I will miss the ability to interact on a daily basis with the peers and mentors that have shaped me in my time here—From debating with my friends the ethics of rock climbing to trading jokes with the wonderful staff in the dining facilities to rehearsing a play every night under the direction of a professor I get to see in class during the day.
Kai is both playful and deeply serious about all that he does. A theater and philosophy double major, he has grown tremendously as an artist and thinker – strengthening his curiosity, creativity, and critical analytical capacities. He is a joy to think with: he is not only quick, but insightful; not only philosophically sophisticated, but well informed by the breadth of the liberal arts. He has been a bright light in our intellectual community!

Amelia Muscott
Geology
Next fall I will begin a PhD in Geology at the University of Utah. I hope to become a professor and continue my own paleoclimate research. What I will remember most about my time at Occidental College is the fantastic research and fieldwork experiences I had while working in Dr. Larsen's Sedimentology and Paleoclimate Lab, including snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and riding a helicopter through the Teton Mountain Range, WY, to collect sediment cores
Amelia is a top student who possesses an uncommon enthusiasm for learning and intellectual curiosity. Her senior thesis achieved Departmental honors and she has presented this work at national conferences. In recognition of her outstanding potential, the National Science Foundation awarded Amelia a prestigious graduate research fellowship to pursue a PhD in geological sciences.

Ashley Nakagawa
Biochemistry
I plan on obtaining my Master's degree in teaching chemistry within the next few years and eventually returning back home to Hawaii to continue my career in secondary education. I am immensely grateful for my time at Occidental College for pushing me out of my comfort zone in classes and giving me so many opportunities for self-development. As I move forward into this next chapter of my life, I know that the memories and relationships that I have made at Oxy will always stay with me.
Ashley is an intellectual powerhouse! She has a true appreciation for learning and excels at the synthesis of ideas through critical analysis. The questions Ashley asked were insightful and thoughtful, highlighting her curiosity and passion for the material. It has been a pleasure getting to know Ashley and I expect many substantial accomplishments await her. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

Louis Nguyen
Media Arts and Culture & Music
What I value most at Oxy was the freedom and agency to explore my many interests. During my time here, I double majored in MAC and Music while remaining involved with Theatre which have been fulfilling intellectually, artistically, and professionally. After Oxy, I plan to stay in LA and hopefully start a career in Creative Development -- a field where I get to continue working all the different artistic muscles in my brain.

Louis Nguyen is everything one hopes for in a student: hard working, responsible, imaginative, thoughtful, curious, and smart. But then Louis always goes that extra step further, exceeding his professors' expectations in the thoroughness, intelligence, rigor, precision, and novelty of his written, audio, and visual work. His consistently outstanding level of achievement has been an inspiration.
- David Kasunic, Music
Mallory North
Biology & Economics
After graduation, I will start working at J.P Morgan in their Wealth Management division in San Francisco. I really value the connections I have developed with faculty at Oxy and the ability to ask questions about material, advice on careers, and get support in general. I also remember being able to play basketball at Occidental and the friends I made.
Mallory has two personalities: one in the classroom and one on the basketball court. In class, she is one of the nicest persons you will ever meet (not so on the court). She is a brilliant student, and yet humble. Underestimate her at your peril! Some Oxy students and sports rivals found this out the hard way. Mallory clearly exceeded all of my expectations as a student and research assistant, and I can't wait to hear about all the great things she will accomplish in the future.

Brian Park
Biochemistry and East Asian Studies
One of the many things that I valued most from Oxy was how I was able to take such a diverse course load towards two vastly different majors and still be able to graduate in four years. Not to mention, my peers and professors have been beyond helpful, providing me crucial guidance and support at every step of my journey towards graduation. I plan to pursue a career in medicine, and with the robust curriculum that I have had the honor of taking thus far, I believe that Oxy has prepared me well to move towards my future goals.
Brian is an amicable, ambitious student with wide-ranging interests. A double major in biochemistry and East Asian Studies, he succeeded in completing two demanding comps projects during his senior year. His incessant intellectual curiosity and genuine passion for learning have inspired students and faculty alike. We will miss his broad smile, kind heart, and infectious laugh!

Jason Park
Politics
The first in his family’s living memory to be on track to earn an undergraduate degree in the States, Jason is a rising star in the Democratic Party, serving in a number of different appointed and elected positions in several Democratic organizations, such as the College Democrats of America, Young Democrats of America, and the California Democratic Party. He is a leader recognized for his growing track record and dedication for the democratic process at all levels and passion for public service.
Jason did extraordinary work as the course preceptor for my research methods course. He always went above and beyond what I asked him to do. He was a true collaborator in teaching the course. The students felt very comfortable going to him for help on their assignments. If that wasn't enough, he also completed an honors level research thesis. His intelligence and work ethic are outstanding.
- Eric Baldwin, Politics
Michael Phaneuf
Computer Science & Economics
After graduation I've accepted an offer to be an economic consultant at Resolution Economics in Culver City. I will always value the relationships I was able to form with professors due to the small class sizes at Oxy and the fact that professors here really care about their students as people.
Michael possesses a keen mind paired with a humble disposition. In both my game theory and public economics courses Michael always identified the key issue at the heart of an abstract concept. He is a careful thinker who excelled in his demanding majors of economics and computer science. I have no doubt that Michael will continue to flourish after Oxy.
- Brandon Lehr, Economics
Bergen Phelps
Critical Theory & Social Justice
After graduation, I plan to attend graduate school and pursue community service. What I have valued most about my time at Occidental are the connections I have made with peers, professors, and other faculty members. I will always be grateful for my community here.
Bergen Phelps is a passionate social justice advocate with a brilliant mind who will leave the world a better place than she found it. She wrote an exceptional senior comps on Menstrual Discourse as a Tool for Liberation that elegantly blended theory with discourse analysis. Bergen is a beloved member of the CTSJ family!
- Caroline Heldman, Critical Theory & Social Justice
Noah Rakestraw
Biochemistry
I will forever appreciate the collaboration amongst the students at Occidental. Being in OXY's collaborative environment enriched my learning experience and it will also serve me well in the next steps of my academic career. I will be attending the University of Florida next fall to begin my PhD in Biomedical Sciences with a focus in Genetics and Chemical Engineering."
It has been a pleasure and honor to have Noah as a member of my research lab. He has been exemplary as a scholar and generous as a mentor to others. His keen analytical ability, creativity and dedication to his work will surely lead to a successful career as a research scientist. I look forward to everything he will accomplish in the future.
- Renee Baran, Biology
Manny Rothman
Media Arts and Culture
In the fall I will attend the American Film Institute Conservatory as an Editing Fellow. After receiving my Masters, I plan to work as a film editor here in LA. Oxy has provided me with a breadth of knowledge and an array of skills (in Theatre, Art History, Mathematics, and Film Production) that have shaped my artistic sensibilities and prepared me for graduate school.
Manny is a cinephile to rival most professors and a talented writer and thinker—both critically and creatively. I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with, more than teaching, Manny—challenging him to push himself and his work further and providing the sort of feedback on his projects that I would to a creative colleague. Manny's off to pursue graduate study at the American Film Institute next year, a conservatory that rarely if ever accepts candidates directly out of undergraduate study.

Dylan Shiu
Philosophy
Oxy has been an awesome experience. I am grateful to my professors for teaching me how to think critically and creatively. Furthermore, I will forever cherish the friends I made here and the memories we made together from the golf course to lunch at the Cooler to late nights in the Zoo, Yellow 2 and the tringle. After college I'm thinking of applying to law school.
Congratulations, and highly deserved! Dylan, you tackle hard problems with an analytic and critical lens, tenacity, and nerve. Always generous and thoughtful in class, and in support of your classmates' learning, you challenge yourself, and pull it off with humility and grace. Embrace your future, and continue being truly exceptional. Know that we are here for lunch and/or counsel.

Luca Van der Meer
Economics
Next year, I will be working at the Kansas City Federal Reserve as a research assistant. I plan to enter the world of academia and pursue a PhD in empirical Macroeconomics. Eventually I would love to settle into a career either of public service at the Federal Reserve or as a Professor at a liberal arts college. Occidental taught me the power of shared curiosity, and many of my most engaging class and research projects were born of one of the questions I brought to my mentor’s in office hours or after classes. Here I have gained an invaluable affinity for collaborative academic communities.
Luca is a warm, generous person, and is such a creative, interesting student. Working with Luca is always exciting—he comes up with creative approaches to problems that I never would have considered, does deep dives into methodology and research without being pushed, and comes up with fascinating, cool, and original insights.
- Jorgen Harris, Economics
Ben Ventresca
Economics
For the coming year I will be teaching English in Spain through the NALCAP program.
I would like to work in a field that combines my econ skillset and my interest in understanding and combating climate change. I will miss a lot of things about Occidental, but first and foremost will be my friends and professors. I always felt comfortable and confident at Occidental, primarily because I know everybody I interacted with supported and cared about me personally.
Whether it is working on a research project on the impacts of sea level rise on infrastructure, studying preferences for solar energy in Eagle Rock, or enjoying a day of ultimate Frisbee or climbing, Ben always brings with him enthusiasm, passion, and deep curiosity. He and his bright smile will be missed at Oxy!
- Jason Wong, Economics
Mia Villegas
English
I will be attending USC Gould Law School as an Honors Scholar with the intent to practice public interest law related to gender-based violence. My time at Occidental College has uniquely prepared me for this future because of its liberal arts education, which has allowed me to take law classes despite my English major and pursue the performing arts without it being my academic focus.. Without Professors Neti, Lerner, and Wyatt guiding me through my English classes, Professor León mentoring me through the law school application process, and Professor LaVertu nurturing my love of singing, I would not have reached the place I am today.
My first impression of Mia was as a singer; she has been a member of the Oxy Glee Club since her first year. She possesses an astonishingly powerful voice and sings with such passion! Over these four years, I have come to know her more deeply. Watching her as an advocate in Project SAFE and as Glee Club soprano section leader, I have witnessed her phenomenal communication skills and commitment to community building. Mia has become a true leader and will be a force to reckon with in the world!
- Desiree LaVertu, Music
Oli Vorster
Diplomacy and World Affairs
My Occidental experience has been one shaped by intellectual community in the Diplomacy & World Affairs department, cherished theater and music performances, and lifelong friendships. Following graduation, I plan to move abroad to intern for the Irish parliament. I then hope to attend graduate school in the United Kingdom in Public Policy to push for LGBT and women’s rights as well as more comprehensive climate change mitigation policy.

Oli is a DWA all-star who has consistently produced among the strongest work in our department, including an exceptional senior thesis on queer pride and liberation. Their exceptional work has a real-world impact, as Oli is a force for good in the department and on campus. They are intelligent, compassionate and dedicated, devoting unparalleled time and energy to serving so many diverse communities--from conflict mediation to organizing TransAwareness Days--on and around campus. Thanks Oli!

Patrick Walsh
Philosophy
At Occidental, I have had a wonderful time studying philosophy and living in Los Angeles. After graduation, I am interested in doing environmental non-profit work and finding a way to channel my love for philosophy into work which helps other. My most general hope is to live a life defined and enriched by love and grounded in care.
It has been a tremendous pleasure to get to know Patrick. He has brought intellectual curiosity, joy, and a spirit of collaboration to class discussions. He has been generous and supportive in his roles as a teaching assistant and peer tutor. And he has offered insightful discussions of moral psychology in a splendid summer research project and a comps project that passed with distinction. Congratulations, Patrick, on receiving this well-deserved honor!

Tracy Watanabe
Biology
After graduation I plan to attend Physician Assistant school, where I will continue my professional career in the medical field. I will always value the diverse liberal arts experience at Oxy, which has allowed me to learn from people of all backgrounds and cultures. With this mindset, I hope to address health disparities and expand access to healthcare in underserved populations.

Tracy is a dedicated scholar, with a passion for molecular biology and the human body. This was best exemplified in her fascinating and creative final paper for Symbiosis (highly regarded by her peers) which proposed a connection between beneficial gut bacteria, production of the neurotransmitter GABA, and depression. We are excited to see where she takes this combination of interests. We wish her the best in her pursuit of a career in medicine.

Anita Wybraniec
Psychology & Spanish Studies
What I valued most about my experience at Oxy are the opportunities I had to grow as a student and as a person. I found that my tutoring position became a space where I could advocate for students and where I could put abstract theories I learned in the classroom into a real life purpose.. I would like to thank Professors MacManus, Terry and Cabral for helping me understand the world in completely new ways, and Luci Masredjian for supporting me as I helped support other students. In the future, I hope to find a field where I can do similar work, perhaps in education, policy, or law.

Anita is one of those students we get a few times in our careers. A double major in Spanish/Psychology, she navigated the demands of both majors with impressive aplomb. Her love of theory was exhibited in her stellar senior comps on subaltern knowledge production in Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands …in perfect Spanish, no less. Welcome, Anita, to Phi Beta Kappa!
- Viviana MacManus, Spanish & French Studies
Shannon Xu
Psychology
After graduation, I plan to become a bilingual speech-language pathologist and conduct more research in bilingualism, language acquisition, and cognitive processes. I am grateful for Oxy's excellent professors and the opportunity to learn and apply knowledge from many different fields.
Shannon is one of the most thoughtful and conscientious students I’ve had the pleasure to teach. In the classroom, she is passionate about the material and inspires her peers with a joy of learning. In the lab, she is careful and meticulous, demonstrating the highest work ethic and clarity of thought. I will miss conversing with her and learning from her.
