DISCUSS: Paying for College with Your Parents

RESEARCH: Finding College Scholarships & Grants

CREATE:

See their college costs VISUALLY through a bar graph that shows their college costs for all 4 years
input savings, scholarships and grants, loans → visually depicted in bar graphs
Students see how much they will owe in student loans at end
(!!!) Students can estimate their monthly payments after graduation AND see what salary they would need to earn in order to make their payments
Do this for three schools they are interested in to compare

DISCUSS:

Had a lot of feedback from teachers on the importance of having financial conversations with families
In this activity, we made sure that students keep any sensitive information with THEM, and they only submit a reflection piece to YOU, the teacher, so that comfort and confidentiality is maintained.

RESEARCH:

Students get to find scholarships and grants that are a good fit for them
Can encourage them to “get started” when the process seems overwhelming
New addition: how to recognize scams!
