GUARD YOUR HEART

3 of 15

The heart is deceitful above all things,And desperately wicked;Who can know it?10 I, the Lord, search the heart, and test the mind,Even to give every man according to his ways,According to the fruit

of his doings.

JEREMIAH 17:9-10

20 But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride, he was deposed from his royal throne and stripped of his glory. 21 He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes. HEROD’S PRIDE

On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died. Acts 12:2-23 (NIV)

PRIDE will cause your heart to harden toward God.

  • Pride is a heart-attitude sin that overflows into a person’s motivation, decision-making, and activities.
  • Pride is at the root of every problem we struggle with
  • The heart of pride is focused on “self.”
  • Prideful people believe they deserve better
  • Pride breeds self pity, which is a major component in depression.

“To fear the Lord is to hate evil;    I hate pride and arrogance,    evil behavior and perverse speech.”

PRIDE 1 – GALATIANS 6:4

If anyone thinks they are something when they are

not, they deceive themselves.

Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else,

PROPER PRIDE:

NOT TO COMPARE OURSELVES TO OTHER

Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.

ROMANS 12:3

PRIDE 2 – LUKE 18:9

CHRIST EXAMPLE TO US WAS HUMILITY

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names… PHILIPPINAS 2:3-9 NLT

5 heartbeat of pride

  1. COMPETITIVE ATITUDE

PHIL.1:15  It’s true that some are preaching out of jealousy and rivalry. But others preach about Christ with pure motives.

  • CRITICAL ATTITUDE

PHIL. 2:14 Do everything without complaining and arguing, 15 so that no one can criticize you.

3. THE SELFISH ATTITUDE

JAMES 3:14 But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying.

4. VENGEFUL ATTITUDE

ROM. 12:17-21 Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. 18 Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. 19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say,

“I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord.

5. JUDGEMENTAL ATTITUDE

MATTHEW 7:1&2 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
