  • Organized by Grade Level or Department
  • Student Utilization/Flow (Entrance, Common Areas, Etc.)
  • Accordion walls between classrooms (Yes/No- Requires Exterior Egress)
  • Public Access to Common Spaces w/ Limitations to Entire Campus (Gym/Cafeteria/Etc.)
  • Storage Locations, Multi-Purpose Spaces, Etc.
  • Specialty Areas/Needs (Kitchen, Cafeteria, Special Ed., Athletics, Fine Arts, CTE Electives)
  • Lab specifications & utilities (Science/CTE/Etc.)
  • Lockers in the hallways
  • Exterior seating area for lunch

BJHS DESIGN COMMITTEE

December 4 l Design Committee Meeting Minutes & Notes

  • Request to work with manipulatives and site perimeter at December 14th Meeting
  • A question was asked comparing current classroom square footage (approx. 650 sq. ft.) to future classroom square footage (approx. 750 sq. ft.)
  • Notes:
    • Reconfigure one of the misc. Electives classrooms to add sq. ft., Kiln room, & additional storage to art; + Three sinks);
    • Reconfigure one of the resources rooms to be an additional self-contained special education classroom;
    • Weight room needs to be more accessible and traffic flow in gym areas need to be well planned and recommended for coaches to be able to see into locker rooms, weight rooms, and gym, etc.
    • Students would prefer not to have accordion walls and would recommend more outlets in classrooms for charging chromebooks,
    • Suggestion: move band hall away from the library
    • Students like lockers and keeps a place for phones to be locked away and not a temptation in class
    • Staff need their own restrooms (not part of student restrooms like it is currently);
    • IBS and special education classes need to be incorporated more into main part of the building;
    • Parent drop off/student drop off needs to be near the office (for coming & going throughout the day);
    • Do we want to keep the outdoor space between the wings?
    • Learning toward organizing by department instead of grade level;
    • Convert workrooms on each hallway into staff restrooms on each hallway;
    • Need a separate secretary space in the front office;
    • Move the SRO room closer to the front of the building/hallways/common areas
    • Movement of common spaces: cafetorium to be able to block off the rest of the campus during events

BJHS DESIGN COMMITTEE

December 4 l Design Committee Meeting Minutes & Notes

  • Notes:
    • Foresee need for more self-contained special education space and have separate living space and academic space; Feel there is a need for more square footage;
    • Consider moving washer/dryer into the classroom and have an outdoor recreation area for special education;
    • Need behavior classroom area + office/small conference space + cool off area;
    • Like resource rooms in the pods with content areas; (maybe reduce storage space and transition to self-contained special programs and/or sensory room vs. motor room);
    • Band- needs exterior door to load instruments in/out of the building;
    • Keep black box next to cafetorium and band hall nearby;
    • Staff prefer not to continue to have lockers (students like them);
    • Athletics: Access to the practice field + laundry access + flow within athletics needs to be well designed;
    • Access in and out of the weight room;
    • Need gates to cut off access to the rest of the campus for all common areas with restrooms within accessible area + consider bus parking for visiting teams and bus pick-up/after school pick-up;
    • Consider converting space for paras to keep their things, pull kids, etc.
    • HVAC: need to be able to turn on sections or zones of a building when needed;
    • Possibly have pods vs. long corridors;
    • Common storage for departments vs. independent;
    • Computer lab not necessary;
    • What will multipurpose be used for (maker space?);
    • Band is loud/keep separated from other areas;
    • Maybe one or two sets of classrooms with accordion walls for co-teach if wanted at anypoint;
    • Elevated ceilings in Engineering, band, black box

BJHS DESIGN COMMITTEE

December 4 l Design Committee Meeting Minutes & Notes

  • Notes:
    • Multiple cross over areas for long corridors;
    • Is resource needed in every core area/hallway?;
    • Theater needs its own storage space (large);
    • Theater is better in the front of the building for guests to come see shows;
    • No need for cafetorium with black box, possibly add space to artsy space near/connected to theater;
    • No need for workroom/teacher space in every hallway (just common storage) and common workroom/bull-pen space on the campus;
    • Staff restrooms per hallway (two toilets instead of one);
    • Really like common student seating/working area in pods (in the middle) with visibility from classrooms);
    • No to accordion walls
    • Yes to outdoor lunch and learning with fence/barrier around it;
    • Drop off near common area (bus/cafeteria)
    • Ensuring hallways are large enough for backpacks, walking in groups, etc.
    • Consider AP/counseling offices more central to the building instead of just up front in admin wing;
    • One staff table: Pro-locker (maximizes space in the classroom) + kids have a lot of stuff to carry around all day (lunch boxes, backpacks, cellphones, athletics bags, cheer bags); (or common hanging area outside/inside classrooms);
    • Idea for bathrooms: only toilets in bathrooms and common sinks outside the restrooms; (No mirrors)
    • Sinks in engineering, construction, art, theater arts, science;
    • Lots of electricity in engineering, construction, science (see BHS newer science labs-hexagons);
    • Restrooms in each hallway/pod

BJHS DESIGN TEAM MEETING l JANUARY 18, 2024

14 of 25

GROUP 1 l 133,900SF

NOTES FROM LRFP:

  • Where would event parking/event entrance near parking be?
  • Where are the designated spaces for internet/electrical?
  • Admin offices are too isolated at the front of the building/possibly move one admin office to a central location in the building.
  • Separate the band/theater space.
  • Band needs access to an exterior wall/loading space.
  • This layout has easy gate access to close off the building.

LRFP Committee’s Second Choice

15 of 25

GROUP 2 l 134,800SF

NOTES FROM LRFP:

  • Like that performance areas are more centrally located in the building.
  • Possibly flip the building (invert it- put classrooms near Tesch and Performance areas near existing BJHS building.)
  • Like hallways as wings with common storage.
  • Would need double doors to lock down the end of each hallway for events. (Too many gates needed to lock-down areas.)
  • Like that all classes would have natural light.
  • Where would dumpsters for the kitchen/cafeteria go without being in the front of the building?

16 of 25

GROUP 3 l 134,600SF

NOTES FROM LRFP:

  • Like bus loading to/from the cafeteria.
  • How would we access fine arts? Seems like they need entry from the main corridor (not through classroom wing).
  • What about leaving Band near gym on exterior wall and moving other fine arts and special education classrooms to the middle pod of classrooms and moving math back to a wing like other core areas instead of math in the middle? (Future expansion options.)
  • Like media center in the middle.
  • Only need 2 gates to lock down for events.
  • Can the office that’s by the kitchen be moved into the center of the building somewhere and dumpsters for the kitchen go in that space?
  • Move ISS away from the front of the building.
  • Like gyms near front and close to existing buildings. Could use existing BJHS parking for events and walk over.

LRFP Committee’s First Choice

17 of 25

GROUP 4 l 132,800SF

NOTES FROM LRFP:

  • Not certain how flow/circulation in the building would work with this layout?
  • This does though seem closest to the current layout.
  • Least favorite option- not much discussion.
