Tips for Teaching Online
Tips for Teachers who are teaching online (1st of 2 slides)
tbaillie@clarenacademy.org Claren Academy
To aim for continuity and routines, I suggest you give yourself a working day schedule around what hours work best in your home. Your 8 hour workday may be split into different time periods based on your family’s needs. The benefit of online learning is that you can work in segments not all at once and even in your pjs!
It is important to stay connected with your colleagues and students everyday to make human connections, especially for young children. The first week, everyone will be expected to be online for an hour a day to assist students and parents as we transition online. We will also have a quick conference call/hangout/ Zoom with staff about how things are going- show your work space!
Don’t overplan. It gets easy to make a list of things to do, APPs or activities, but try to keep it simple as students cannot work as fast online by themselves as they can with your support.
Don’t plan too far in advance as needs change and suggestions may be made that would cause you to alter a lot. After the first week, we may use a different system/platform. It is too much to get organized during the break. Plan a few activities in each area in advance in case something else happens. Planning 2 weeks in advance is great!
Don’t answer emails and messages as they come into your inbox, unless it is your hour online to chat. Set aside time each day for ‘office hours’ to respond and let people know that in advance. I would suggest you start the day each day by answering emails from 8:00-8:30 and then 3:30-4:00 or something like that. They will need to hear back from you more frequently the first two weeks, so answering emails only once a day is not enough.
Tips for Teachers who are teaching online (2nd of 2 slides)
tbaillie@clarenacademy.org Claren Academy
Prep your things and then once they are online, go through as a student would to ensure it works, especially all the links and timing of things.
Plan for learning that is humanly connected as we learn best not in isolation. This includes: online discussions, video chats, blogs, etc.
Create a sense of familiarity each day. Young children need connection. Make a video welcome to the day, check in messages as to how they are feeling, tutorials for some lessons, powerpoints with a voice over, do a Zoom.
Have students present their learning in a variety of ways - voice recordings, videos, etc. and share it with each other. Get them to comment on each other’s work.
Try to stay with routines - like calendar or morning meeting, yoga, etc. for each day, students appreciate the continuity.
