The Compelling Why?

What I wonder:

  • What are the potential pitfalls for students analyzing texts from diverse cultures?
  • What kinds of questions help students to challenge their thinking about literature and culture?
  • How can we support students in making these inquiries?

Essential questions:

  • What are the points of commonality we noticed between the different works of literature we read today (and between all peoples)? Where did the literature diverge?
  • How can we make sure diverse voices and cultures are honored?

Compelling Why Now?

  • Valuing the “tapestry of the human condition”
  • Developing cultural competence
  • Reducing prejudice and bias
  • Using literature as a passport to the world

And How?

Wizard Bakery

Willpower Custard Pudding (Top Seller!)An edible talisman against bad luck for when your nerves are shot during exam periods or important business trips.

Peacemaking Raisin Scone Give it to someone as an apology. Your apology will be accepted, 100% guaranteed. But if you are apologizing out of duty rather than genuine remorse, it will not work.

Broken-heart Pineapple Madeleine (Top Seller!)Helps your broken heart heal faster. As its baker, though, I do not recommend it. If you are too eager to “get over it,” you may end up in a meaningless rebound relationship.

What Students “Baked”

Disappearing Doughnuts: yummy jelly filled doughnuts to feed to your math teacher to make him forget the Friday quizzes. Best presented on Thursdays for full effect.

Cookie Crumbles: a cookie made with all sorts of cookie dough jumbled in one delicious gigantic cookie. It will take so long to eat such deliciousness that students will forget all about college acceptances and rejections.

COVID Custard: present this creamy delight to your grannie or anyone without teeth or over 65. It will protect them from contracting COVID and allow them visitation rights to your house so they can make some real desserts.

Their New Thinking

Thematically: “different isn’t always bad”; “people act in accordance to their own needs”, “vulnerability leads to growth”; “coming of age-15”; “revenge”

Observationally: “like a Harry Potter kind of story”, “has an international flavor-all those pastries from around the world”, “ a magical quality which could be from anywhere”

Takeaways: “Korea seems so modern”, “she is a clever story writer, uses lots of references I would not have expected (Narnia)”, “adults say some of the same things there as here-(children should be in bed at this time)”

After participating in World Literature, I have many new and helpful perspectives of the society around me. Through this class, I was able to learn that the differences in our cultures are not all that different but only make us unique. Thanks Mrs. Neary for a great semester, have a great rest of the year!

I loved learning about the literature from different countries and I loved how we had a lot of freedom to pick what we were interested in. Thank you for an amazing semester!

The Best thing about world lit for me is the way it changed my thoughts on countries. It allowed me to learn all sides of stories.
