About me
I’m passionate about Music Education, particularly about finding ways of incorporating technology into music. I teach music as if it’s a language, with its own signs and symbols.
This is my ninth year at SWS in Whitby. Students in the Durham DSB receive 1:1 Chromebooks in Grades 7 through 12. We are also a Google board, using platforms like Google Classroom regularly.
Feel free to contact me any time via or
I don’t work for Soundtrap or Spotify.

Why Soundtrap?
It’s Easy!
In a digital age where Ss have access to most anything using the supercomputers in the palms of their hands, supporting their music education with digital means can be one more way we can help them unlock their creativity and potential.

Warning!
Soundtrap is not FREE
My board purchased a license for 10 000 seats after many teachers, myself included, proposed it would be a worthwhile investment.
We ran out of seats before the end of the first year.
There are ways to use the software without a license, though not safely with Ss.
Spooky Music
Grade 5 class collaboration, T at controls, Ss input, 10 minutes
Create With Purpose
Gr. 3s chose their own purpose for music then created music to suit that purpose.
MIDI template, Ss change instrument, add beats and more to create new genre of anthem. Best versions on announcements.
Gr. 7/8 Ss demonstrated understanding of ABA form, beat. This was my exemplar/ template
Rap My Name
O Canada Remix
10 Minutes Easy Does It
Gr. 7/8s were given 10 minutes to create. No other instructions. (This S had previous ST experience. But still...)
Honour Band
A colleague used Soundtrap to record play-along tracks so Ss could practice at home and make progress in short order
How to Use Soundtrap video (created using WeVideo)
One (Wo)Man Band
Ss record themselves playing four separate tracks. When played together, sounds like one.
12-Bar Blues
Backing track provided. Ss improvised. Then recorded separate reflection track.
Performance Portfolio
Instrumental Ss record themselves playing. Each month a new task. Ss (Ts/ parents/admin) see progress over time.
IRT Student Feedback
I was listening to S playing and typing feedback. S was online and made adjustments immediately. Ahead of report card deadline!
TODAY
I'm trying to help you keep all tracks lined up. you can mute the ones you don't want to listen to instead of having them all play at the same time.
ok thank you
Oh no! You deleted #23
I want that back!!! lol
Does this mean that I do not have to do it again?
Great progress! Your tonguing is consistent and your tempo steady.
(you do NOT have to do it again!)
