Intro

  • Mission statement:
    • EVERYONE has a right to accessible banking
    • Create experiences that elicit a sense of belonging from all current and potential users, reflecting their unique needs, motivations, and experiences
  • The intersection between invention (foreseeing the future), recognition (seeing the problem), and inclusion (having the user be seen) is the sweet spot for inclusive innovation and design1 (add citation to shoutout)

20/80 rule

  • We need to stop thinking about inclusion after we create a concept or design.
  • We need to put people with disabilities at the very center of our efforts to innovate

Involve PWDs

  • Inclusive leadership and business buy in
  • Intentional mix of people with a variety of lived experiences who are paid for their expertise (both internally and externally)
  • Moving from User-Centered Design to Co-Design to User-Created Design methods1
    • User-centered design
      • PWDs are consulted
    • Co-design
      • PWDs are a part of the design team
    • User-created design
      • PWDs designing the solution itself

Root causes

Case Study – PWD led innovation

  • TD Accessibility Adapter
    • The TD Accessibility Adapter is a browser extension that enables core accessibility functions on any website.
    • The TD Accessibility Adapter was designed by colleagues with disabilities - some who haven't publicly disclosed.
    • The team worked closely with the TD Digital Accessibility and Assistive Technologies team, and TD's Persons with Disabilities employee resource groups, to ensure that the extension would not create additional accessibility barriers.
    • The TD Accessibility Adapter is available now via the Chrome Web Store and is available at no cost

Case Study – Co-Design

  • Tamarack Institute: an engagement where we are co-designing solutions for individuals experiencing poverty with people who have lived experiences of poverty
    • Pre-training
    • Charter, how we work together, what feels like doing this in a good way
    • Systemic issue of paying people for their labor that can affect their gov subsidies
    • Making sure that we enough time to be able to have consensus in our meetings
    • Collaborative conversations that set up the space for deep explorations of the problem

Steal this activity

  • Team Charter Workshop
    • Team Canvas Basic is a strategic framework that helps team members to kick off projects and align on a common vision.

    • People: who are the people on the team? What are our roles?
    • Values: What do we stand for? What are the common values we want to place at the core of our shared work?
    • Purpose: What is our purpose as a team?
    • Principles: What principles guide our work?
    • Agreement: What do we agree we should always do? What should we never do? (This is a great place to discuss conflict management styles, consensus, etc.)
