Overview of Summer Term

Our summer calendar will be consistent with EL recommendations with added content for more fun, engaging activities for our scholars that we hope to increase academic achievement as well.

Remote Scholars Summer:

  • Afternoons only
  • Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning (90 minutes live lessons)
  • Some opportunities for participating in our in-person themed activities

Overview of In-person Summer Term

Theme: Career Exploration with an emphasis on Black and Brown Excellence

  • Scholars will perform an EL Case Study all summer interviewing various community members about their profession.
  • Scholars will research the careers prior to interviews
  • Each class will focus on a career strand from the Wisconsin state standards
  • The final product will be a document (e.g. magazine/book) of careers made by our scholars to be distributed to the community to describe various available careers in the community and highlight people who are already in those careers
  • All completed projects will be part of an in-school book
  • High quality projects worthy of publishing outside of OCS will be printed and shared publicly

Details of Remote and In-person Summer Term

Remote Scholars Summer:

  • Afternoon hours, taught by one teacher for K, 1 and 2 (Ms. Gobourne)
  • Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning via live lessons, EL video instruction, One City video instruction, Zearn online learning, and See Saw practice.
  • Some opportunities for participating in our in-person themed activities
  • 45 minutes of live math instruction
  • 45 minutes of live reading instruction
  • Asynchronous learning and practice

Details of Remote RETURNING to In-person Summer Term

Returning Remote Scholars Summer:

  • One 1st graders to return full time
  • Five 5K scholars will return in-person for morning Skills Block, Crew, Breakfast, and 1 subject and join for afternoon hours with remote students from home
  • 5K returning half day students will be taught as a separate group

In-Person Summer Schedule

  • Two hours of small group Skills Block differentiated whole school by reading microphase (9:30 - 11:30am)
  • For these two hours, scholars will be in cohorts based on ability
  • After these two hours, scholars will return to their normal cohorts for the rest of their day

    • ELA Modules (Science & Social Science)
    • Research
    • Field Experiences

Friday Field Excursions either in-school or in the community. The first Friday (6/25) will be at One City.

Health & Policy Requirements for Those Participating in Summer Term

  • No Change in health policies for scholars and parents.
  • If traveling, notify the school (schoolhealth@onecityschools.org) and be sure to quarantine (7 days after last date of travel) and test upon return (3-5 days after returning)
  • Testing on-site with binax rapid testing at One City and picked up and tested by Exact Sciences. Schedule appointments with Ms. Perea (schoolhealth@onecityschools.org)
  • Use your best judgment on what constitutes travel.
    • Avoid travel outside your bubble
    • Avoid amusement parks, California, Florida, plane travel
    • Use common sense and community sense.
  • School Health & Operations will not answer individual case-specific questions.
  • Close contacts are now quarantined for 7 days and testing on day 7.
  • Excused absences are illness, funerals, religious holidays, etc. Other absences require scholars to make up work missed.
