    • Polytheism means the worship of more than one God.

  • Anubis: god of the dead (human-animal mix) the god of embalming and the dead.
  • Since jackals were often seen in cemeteries, the ancient Egyptians believed that Anubis watched over the dead.

  • Re, or Amon Re: the sun god (Represented in human form, sometimes with a ram's head, or as a ram,)
  • Amon-Re was originally known just as Amon, Amen or Amun. In Thebes, where Amon was considered their patron saint, he was merged with Re, the sun god.
  • Amon-Re was associated with creating the world and protecting the helpless.
  • The worship of Amon-Re survived many periods of Egyptian history.

  • Osiris: the god of the underworld
  • He is usually depicted as a man with green skin and a beard associated with the pharaoh, wearing a crown with two large ostrich feathers, and legs partially wrapped like a mummy.
  • Osiris was the ancient Egyptian god of the dead, the underworld, and the afterlife.
  • Egyptians believed all pharaohs became Osiris when they died.

  • Isis: goddess of magic, motherhood, and love.
  • Isis is depicted as a woman wearing a long sheath dress with an empty throne on her headdress.
  • In some forms, she is a woman with outstretched wings making her the goddess of the wind. Often she is shown with her child son, Horus, with a crown and a vulture.

  • He is probably most well-known as the protector of the ruler of Egypt.

  • Art showed historical events, everyday life, and religious events.
  • Painting had a distinctive style in which people’s heads and legs are always seen from the side, but upper bodies are shown straight on.

Tombs contained work such as:

  • Art and hieroglyphics on walls and columns
  • Stone statues and carvings
    • Egyptians were skilled stoneworkers.
