  • Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed is a Welsh medium comprehensive school for pupils aged 11-18. It is supported by Newport City Council and the catchment area is Newport and South Monmouthshire.
  • The official language of Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed is Welsh and this is the language of teaching and assessment in all subjects apart from English. Every child will study Welsh as a subject and will sit first language Welsh examinations.

As a school we aim to:

  • Maintain an attendance rate of a minimum of 95.5%
  • Maintain levels of attendance by promoting a positive and welcoming atmosphere in which pupils feel safe, secure and valued.
  • Raise awareness of the importance of good attendance.
  • Ensure that attendance is monitored effectively and reasons for absences are recorded promptly and consistently.
  • Ensure good time keeping at the start and end of the school day.

Good attendance is important because:

  • Statistics show a direct link between under-achievement and poor attendance

Cwricwlwm yr ysgol

School Curriculum

  • Every pupil will study subjects within the 6 areas of learning and experience in the Curriculum for Wales which are; language, literacy and communication, mathematics and numeracy, science and technology, humanities, expressive art and health and wellbeing.
  • Religion, values and ethics are a statutory part of Curriculum for Wales and it’s mandatory to teach these themes to all learners. This is mainly undertaken within humanities lessons. A daily act of collective worship is held which is moral and spiritual in nature.
  • Bydd pob disgybl yn astudio pynciau o fewn 6 maes dysgu a phrofiad Cwricwlwm i Gymru sef; iaith, llythrennedd a chyfathrebu, mathemateg a rhifedd, gwyddoniaeth a thechnoleg, dyniaethau, celfyddydau mynegiannol ac iechyd a lles.

Musical Lessons

Mae Cerddoriaeth Gwent yn cydweithio a ni er mwyn trefnu gwersi yn ystod amser ysgol. Ceir arddangosfa o offerynnau gwahanol a chyfle i drefnu gwersi yn gynnar yn y tymor newydd. Yn anffodus nid yw’n bosibl darparu gwersi offeryn i bob disgybl sy’n awyddus i dderbyn gwersi am ddim.

Gwent music work with us to organise lessons during the school day. We have an exhibition of the instruments and lessons available in the Autumn term. Unfortunately it is not possible for the school to provide these lessons for free.

Cludiant i’r Ysgol

School Transport

  • Free home to school transport is provided to secondary aged pupils who live three miles or more from their catchment or nearest available school, including Welsh-medium and faith schools. If there is a problem then parents should contact the officers of the transport departments of Newport or Monmouthshire.
  • Buses and pupils leave at 3.00pm at the end of the school day.
  • If a pupil misses the bus then they should return to the school office where every attempt will be made to contact parents and arrange safe transport.

  • Whilst many factors can contribute to the difficulties experienced by some pupils, we believe that through parents, pupils and teachers working together we can address many of these matters.
  • The school policy recognises the definition of ALN within the present legislation and it’s statutory duty.

Mae tair prif elfen i'n polisi:

Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed fully recognises the contribution it makes to child protection.

There are three main elements to our policy: 

• prevention through the teaching and pastoral support offered to pupils

• procedures for identifying and reporting cases, or suspected cases, of abuse. Because of our day to day contact with children school staff are well placed to observe the outward signs of abuse  

• support to pupils who may have been abused.

Our policy applies to all staff and volunteers working in the school and governors. Learning support assistants, mid-day supervisors, caretakers, office staff as well as teachers can be the first point of disclosure for a child.

Darperir Llyfr Cyswllt i bob disgybl. Mae’r Llyfr Cyswllt yn ddolen gyswllt bwysig iawn rhwng yr ysgol a rhieni. Defnyddir y Llyfr Cyswllt i gofnodi pob gwaith cartref a osodir ynghyd â nodiadau a hysbysiadau. Yn ogystal, defnyddir Classcharts er mwyn cofnodi pwyntiau cadarnhaol a negyddol am waith, ymddygiad a chymhelliant disgybl. Gall rieni gael mynediad i’r wybodaeth yma ar gyfer eu plentyn.

Each pupil is provided with a Contact Book. This Contact Book is an important link between the school and parents. Pupils will record all homework set in their Contact Book and they will also use it to enter reminders and school notices. In addition, Classcharts is used to record positive and negative points about a pupil’s work, behavior and motivation. Parents can access this information for their child.

Sex and Relationship Education

Dysgir agweddau gwyddonol o addysg rhyw yn y cwricwlwm gwyddoniaeth a thechnoleg. Mae'r gwersi yma yn stadudol, h.y. mae’n rhaid i bob disgybl eu mynychu. Yn ogystal â hyn mae yna raglen gynhwysfawr o wersi addysg rhyw fel rhan o'r gwersi iechyd a lles. Delir â phynciau fel teimladau, aeddfedu rhywiol, atal cenhedlu, clefydau rhywiol, a cheir cyfle i drafod materion rhywiol.

Scientific aspects of sex education are taught in the science and technology curriculum. These lessons are statutory, i.e. all pupils must attend. As well as these lessons, there is a comprehensive programme of sex education as part of the health and wellbeing lessons. Subjects such as feelings, emotions, sexual maturity, sexual diseases and contraception are dealt with. There is also an opportunity to discuss any sexual matter.

Charging for Activities

Ni chodir tâl am unrhyw ran o’r cwricwlwm fel y cyfryw. Er hyn, mae’n bosib y bydd gofyn i deulu gyfrannu‘n wirfoddol tuag at ymweliadau addysgol, cost gwneud pethau yn yr ysgol sydd yn mynd i’r cartref i’w defnyddio a rhai gweithgareddau allgyrsiol. Mae’r gefnogaeth sydd ar gael wrth y cartref yn hanfodol er mwyn i rai gweithgareddau fynd yn eu blaen. Dilynir polisi Codi Tâl Awdurdod Addysg Casnewydd.

No charge is made for any provision of the basic curriculum. However, voluntary payments may be requested for educational visits, the cost of any articles made in school and taken home for use and certain extra curricular activities. The support from contributions from parents will ultimately determine the viability of any proposed activity. The school follows Newport City Council Education Authority’s policy.

Trefnir Noson Rhieni ar gyfer pob blwyddyn. Ar gyfer blwyddyn 7 trefnir dwy noson rieni, y cyntaf yn nhymor yr Hydref i drafod gyda’r tiwtor personol a’r ail yn nhymor yr Haf ar gyfer trafod cynnydd gyda’r athrawon pwnc.

A parents’ evening is arranged for every year group. Year 7 have two parents evenings one in the Autumn term to discuss with their personal tutor and the second in the Summer term to discuss academic work with subject teachers.
