  • Gun violence in the neighborhood is among the worst in Philadelphia.�In 2021 (as of Oct 31) 45 people were shot in the neighborhood. Six people have died.

  • Three quarters of undeveloped lots are cared for by neighbors, owners, or community organizations - totaling about 419 lots.
  • About 117 lots -- are uncared for and in poor condition.

  • In 2020-2021, Bethune Elementary School educated about 532 children from 5 to 15 years old, at the heart of the Hunting Park - East Tioga community.

4. HELP RESIDENTS INVEST IN THEIR HOMES & BLOCKS

[We need to be] repairing and weatherizing long term residents’ homes first. Most seniors are on fixed incomes and can not afford repairs.

  • More than half of homes were built before 1940 – and old homes come with expensive maintenance.
  • Many homes in the neighborhood are switching from owner-occupancy to rentals.�About 400 homes have made the switch since 2010.

It would be nice if the city cared for these neighborhoods before gentrification. We need new affordable housing for new people moving in the neighborhood.

7. IMPROVE COMMUNITY HEALTH

FOOD

  • Nearly the entire neighborhood is further than a ten-minute walk from a grocery store.

HEAT

  • The neighborhood is one of the hottest in Philadelphia, with summer temperatures that can reach up to 20 degrees hotter than elsewhere in the city.

HEALTHCARE & MENTAL HEALTH

  • Residents in the neighborhood are more likely to suffer from chronic issues like obesity, diabetes, and asthma than residents elsewhere in the city.

[There are] too many corner stores. ... They really don’t have what the different cultures need or desire.

8. IMPROVE GERMANTOWN AVENUE & BGE

  • Improving Broad, Germantown & Erie is a “top priority” for Mayor Kenney, he has said.
  • Vacancy on the street is high. In early 2020, about a quarter of storefronts were vacant. In 2003, the median commercial street citywide has a vacancy rate of 14 percent.

Caribbean Feast’s “Children & Family Festival” in 2017. Events make the street livelier and more welcoming.

Improvements to Fish Park at BGE were finished in 2021. Many more improvements are planned.
