Online learning is tough - there is a lot less space for interaction than in-person workshops and a much bigger chance that people “zone out” and lose focus, especially when there's too much text on the slides, or the presenter is going on and on for too long.

We are aware of this challenge, and we want to shake it up as much as possible to make sure you all get the most out of our time together. We are committed to making the sessions as interactive as possible, with breaks for discussions, activities, questions, quizzes, and more. Please feel free to email us with any suggestions for how we can do that! If you know of any apps we can use or have any ice breakers or energizers to suggest, we would love to include them.

But, then, what would it mean to practice integrated management?

Well, for that question, maybe let’s start with the opposite: what would “segregated management” look like?

Segregated management would be one where the components and activities of the system (house, organization, territory, etc…) are planned, organized, and controlled in an isolated manner, not considering the connections and interrelations of its components internally and externally…

People are in a circle with their backs to each other, facing only their field of work, and are only able to see just a slight relation to the nearest/direct other fields, but not with others…For example, the environment can see little relation with farming and education, but they are completely backward to the private sector and can’t have a perspective that allows collaboration with them.

On the other hand, integrated management would be where these activities, components, and even goals are managed in a coordinated way, paying attention to its connections and flows, both inside the system and outside, communicating with other systems and managers.

These systems and processes interact with each other over this area and in time

A landscape is a socio-ecological system where you’ll find a diversity of people, each with their perspective and interests, and with a diversity of land uses.

WHAT IS THE SIZE OF A LANDSCAPE?

The ideal scale is one that enables the management of social and environmental processes in an integrated manner.

Goal: Break down size thresholds of what is considered a landscape

[Highlight the importance of the broader/systemic and area-based perspective that is covered in a landscape scale compared to other approaches. However, you’ll explore the comparison with other approaches in the next session.]

When talking about landscape, we are talking about an area, a territorial approach… But what is the ideal size of a landscape? What is the ideal scale?

It should be large enough to include different overlapping systems (environment, ecosystems, economic (ex. food), social, and cultural) and generate systemic benefits in these same areas.
But at the same time, it should be small enough to be managed by the people who live in this area, use it, and are impacted.

So, it can’t be a national level scale (or even sub-national), but also can’t be a farm or a community level scale.

Traditional land management projects tend to focus on smaller scales, such as a single farm or village, with one type of partner and in one sector. However… Environmental processes (like flows of water, nutrients, sediment, plants, animals, and disease organisms) operate beyond these social and cultural boundaries.

Size: The size of a landscape is determined by stakeholders in the landscape based on the issues and opportunities they are concerned with. A landscape can range from 100.000 ha to 1 million ha depending on what the partners in a landscape initiative consider to be a socially, ecologically, and politically meaningful area. However, this range can be very flexible.

The Model Forest example for defining the LANDSCAPE (IMFN toolkit) shows:

There is no minimum or maximum prescribed area for a Model Forest. For some, boundaries correspond to an existing administrative unit such as a municipality or multiple administrative units. Others are defined by an ecological boundary, such as a watershed or multiple watersheds. Alternately, boundaries may be determined by a particular issue stakeholders wish to address, such as species at risk or landscape restoration, as examples. The key element is to ensure a diversity of interests, land uses and stakeholder representation within the area selected.

In other words, a Model Forest must be large enough to represent the full range of landscape uses and values in the surrounding area.

One example: Isthe Carood Watershed Model Forest in the Philippines is one of the smallest with around 20.750 hectares, while Chiquitano Model Forest in Bolivia covers 20 million hectares. Most Model Forests range from 300,000 to 500,000 hectares. A landscape area may start out smaller and grow in size over time as new issues or priorities arise or capacties are strenghtned (though growth in area is not required).

It is hard to understand what a landscape is and imagine its size. But it is important to understand large enough and small enough. Probably, one of the best ways to view the landscape is with a satellite image…where you can see land uses, natural characteristics, geographical and geological features, and sometimes map where some of the stakeholders are.

Landscape boundaries are determined by stakeholders in the landscape, based on their contexts. They may be defined by:

So, how can I define the boundaries of the landscape I want to work with? This is not an easy question, and it is not a question that can be answered alone… but together with the group of people you are engaging with…

What factors define a boundary for each stakeholder?

It depends on the issues and opportunities they are interested in…thus, there is a certain level of subjectivity as a social construction…

Factors that can define boundaries:

Natural, like an ecosystem

Watershed

Jurisdiction

Existing areas (ex. protected areas)...

Social and economic aspects, cultural identification

Or even the distribution of certain species of interest, if this can help the alignment of a group and cover enough of the processes mentioned before.

Others are defined by a biophysical or ecological boundary, such as a watershed or multiple watersheds. Alternately, boundaries may be determined by a particular issue stakeholders wish to address, such as species at risk or landscape restoration, as examples.

Or maybe you can do a combination of them…

It certainly is a complex task, that demands a lot of dialogue and meetings. But there are no exact rules for it. You may start something with a smaller group of stakeholders and then adjust accordingly to new partners arriving. Sometimes you may start smaller and, if it feels necessary, you may expand the area you work with this approach (although you’re not obliged to do that)...

In the end this is a flexible process ... boundaries can change.

Most times ILM and Landscape Approach mean the same and can be used interchangeably. However, the term ILM might give a more practical perspective.

ILM is a method of working towards sustainability and resilience through long-term collaboration between groups. It helps achieve resilient or sustainable landscapes (including water- and sea-scapes) that can support ecological functions, safeguard native biodiversity, and sustain other critical environmental processes for years to come, under changing conditions, stressors, and uncertainties.

The landscape approach aims to move away from isolated, project-based land management programs to a system that considers the needs and concerns of all stakeholder groups. It encourages stakeholders to weigh competing demands, identify overlapping needs, reduce tradeoffs, and capture synergies.
