The Honors Project

All Honors students will design, carry out, and deliver a project that is approved by the ASC Honors Committee. An Honors Project is a challenging, original project completed by a student’s final semester (or after thesis defense). In every case, the student must submit a proposal that must be approved by the ASC Honors Committee.

Project options include:

Honors thesis (will also graduate with honors research distinction)

Six (6) credit hours (or the equivalent) over at least two semesters of the following:

• Service-learning experience (S coursework)

• Research experience (4998H coursework)

• Internship (1191, 3191, 4193, or department equivalent)

• Coursework that results in a creative arts project (3191 or department equivalent)

• Global education experience/study abroad coursework

• Other projects as approved by the ASC Honors Committee

OR

Can combine multiple experiences

Hour/Credit Requirements

MUST span multiple semesters

Summer term counts
Semesters do not need to be consecutive

3 credits (or ~150 hours) of involvement PER semester for 2+ semesters

Or equivalent

Academic credit preferred, but not required (except for thesis)

Need Supervisor/Mentor/etc. to confirm your hours & advise

After receiving B2 feedback, B3&B4 are fair game to submit- recommend doing these once project materials are wrapping up so can complete reflection component while experiences are still fresh.

Designed to follow four-year timeline, but definitely doesn’t have to (especially if planning on graduating early).

You can begin working on your Honors Project AT ANY TIME. You do not need to wait until Benchmark 1 or 2 to start.

Each benchmark is sent to Honors Project Committee for approval.

End of Year 1 -> Benchmark 1 -> Submit Honors Project Planning Form to maintain Honors status. Vague overview of project idea.

End of Year 2 -> Benchmark 2 -> Submit Honors Project Proposal. Detailed project idea.

End of Year 4 OR Last Semester OR Semester of Thesis Defense

Benchmark 3 -> Submit Honors Project Report and upload to ePortfolio (GEN students only). Reflect on how your project went.

Benchmark 4 -> Present at the Honors Project Symposium or another approved forum. Show off your findings and what you got out of your project!

Guidelines

You are ALWAYS welcome (and encouraged) to participate in the Honors Project Symposium, even if using another forum.
Entire HP MUST be covered within other presentation.
Other presentation must be your individual work only (no group presentations).

Recommended to present once your project wraps up, even if not graduating (can put off Summer presentation if wanting bigger event)

What Happens at the Symposium?

Presentation medium is up to you (poster, slideshow, video, musical performance, reading, etc.)- you are the expert of your project so up to you what would be most appropriate.
Total presentation time = 30 minutes (elevator pitch approach recommended, but one long presentation also okay)
Community members will walk/browse projects freely
Performance is pass/non-pass (did you present and was it substantial?)

What to Include in Presentation

Must include: Name, Start/End date of all experiences, Reflection component
Recommended to include: Major(s)/Minor(s), intended graduation semester, Acknowledgements, Pictures/Visuals, Project Category(ies)
For more creative projects- should still have physical or digital title card to accompany your presentation.

Remember people will be walking around and will likely not spend all 30 minutes at your spot- recommended to make it easy to see what type of project you did at a glance.

Acknowledgements- if an org or supervisor hosted you, mentorship, funding, etc.

If your project is large like an art installation or music performance that has either already happened or is too big to host at the Symposium, encouraged to bring recordings, pictures, etc. and create a poster or other medium based on those.

Research/Thesis, Internship, Study Abroad, Service-Learning, Creative Arts Project, Combo (okay if doesn’t fit into any of these categories)

Reminder that Service-Learning category only includes coursework with “S” designation- anything else is an “other” (can list volunteering/mentorship/service on presentation materials if you desire)
