Kindergarten Literacy

Half time vs. Full time

Historical Context

IRI data from 2015-16 and 2016-17 was used to determine the need to move to an all day kindergarten model. I’ve taken those old reports and compiled some of the main ideas for you to see why the change was made.

  • Options for AM/PM (½ days) kindergarten and for A/B (every other day) kindergarten - varied by school
  • Parent option to pay tuition for the other half and be in an ADED (all day every day) program
  • Early literacy funds were used for an intervention called Kinder Grow
    • students in the bottom 25% based on the fall IRI
    • an intervention class opposite of their kindergarten class - bussed to Hubbard

Key Data Points

  • 10-14% of parents paid tuition for ADED kindergarten
  • ADED kindergarten groups had higher socioeconomic status, fewer IEPs and no students learning English as a second language
  • Kinder Grow intervention groups had lowest socioeconomic status, the most IEPs and the most students learning English as a second language
  • ADED groups started with the highest average IRI score in the fall and maintained the highest average IRI score in the spring
  • Kinder Grow group average fall IRI score was significantly lower than all the other groups but had higher growth in the spring than all the other groups and significantly higher than most groups.
  • Scores and growth in the AM/PM and A/B groups varied but were between the ADED and Kinder Grow groups.

Change to Full Time Kindergarten for All

The data painted a clear picture:

  • The students with the greatest need were not accessing full time kindergarten through the tuition based ADED kindergarten.

  • When given the opportunity to participate in an all day program, the students in the bottom 25% made the most growth from the fall IRI to the spring IRI.

  • The board approved the change to full time kindergarten for all students beginning in 2018-19
