Background

Support to Government Schools

Asha Chennai supports 100 government schools spread across Tamilnadu.

Our 35 computer teachers go to all of these schools.

They teach Computer Science using Asha’s own Curriculum.

They also teach Maths, English, Science and other subjects using our Asha Kanini app that provides easy access to digital contents.

Each computer teacher has a laptop and Smartphone with data plan.

Many of these laptops were aging and difficult to use.

Libraries

Asha Chennai is also running libraries at 7 villages – 4 in Thoothukudi Dist, 2 in Villupuram Dist and one in Thiruvallur Dist.

These are located in remote villages and mostly serve the children there.

Currently they only have books but our hope has been to turn them into digital libraries with access to good digital contents.

Each library has a librarian. The librarians are also mostly youngsters with teaching experience and can be trained to use these computers.

Project Summary

Proposal

18 Laptops + Accessories (Speaker, Mouse and a bag) for Computer Teachers.

7 Laptops + Accessories (same) + 7 Tablets for Libraries

(Note as the laptops cost as specified was much higher, we bought only 7 tablets instead of the proposed 14).

Distribution

Laptops and tablets were purchased and loaded with Asha Kanini and other software before Dec 24^th.

They were distributed to the teachers and project coordinators (for the libraries) on Dec 27^th.

For the libraries the project coordinators distributed them to the librarians.

Libraries

The laptops and tablets are being used at all our libraries. These are continuing to function esp. during these days of school closure.

Mini-Schools

As the schools are closed, Asha teachers are running mini-schools.

Mini-schools cater to children in the local community taking the necessary precautions against Covid.

Our mini-schools are using the laptops provided by Amazon.

Seetha Ezhilarasi – Pandur Mini-school

Seetha has been a computer teacher with Asha for more than 5 years. She has been involved in the development of our CS curriculum. She usually teaches at PUMS Ramanjeri, PUPS Nemiliagaram and PUPS Pattarai Perumbudur,

She is now running a mini-school in her house at Pandur, a village in Thiruvallur District.

J. Divya – Natarajapuram Mini-school

Divya has been working as a computer teacher with Asha for more than 3 years. She usually teaches at PUMS Koppampatti, PUMS Athikinaru and PUPSChidambarampatti.

She is now running a mini-school in her house at Natarajapuram in Kovilpatti, as well as another one at Govindanpatti, a village nearby. These are in Thoothukudi District.

M. Anusuya – Ariyapakkam Mini-school

Anusuya has been working as a computer teacher with Asha for more than 5 years. She usually teaches at PUPS Athivakkam, PUMS Neyveli and PUPS Kannigaiper.

She is now running a mini-school along with another teacher Thenmozhi at the Thenmozhi’s house in Ariyapakkam. As the children in this mini-school come from a poor background we also serve nutrition at this school.

Valarmathi – Koovachipatti Library

Valarmathi is working as an Asha Kindergarten teacher at PUPS Koovachipatti. Recently we opened a library in the village and she is also doubling as the librarian there.��With the school closed she also runs a mini-school for the Kindergarten children at her own home in Koovachipatti. The new library / activity centre continues to serve the children of the village.
