What is a timeline?

Timelines are commonly found in biographies, informational texts, and personal schedules.

January 3, 1945 Barb Davis was born in Mankato, MN

May 28, 1963

Barb Davis graduated from Mankato West High School.

December 15, 1968 Barb Davis graduated from the University of Minnesota with a business degree.

February 11, 1969

Barb Davis accepts a job with IBM.

A timeline is a diagram of related items or events displayed sequentially on a line.

Why use timelines?

Timelines are used to organize events in order by time, for example, by date.

Timelines are commonly found in biographies, informational texts, and personal schedules. Below is an example of a timeline showing dates from a person’s life in chronological order.

How to display data sets using a timeline?

  1. Decide what person, event, or procedure you will be describing in the timeline.
  2. Determine whether your timeline is by time, date, or event.
  3. Create a list of events with the time or date they occurred.
  4. Order the events from earliest to latest.
  5. Add the events to your timeline in order, with the earliest on the left.
