Energy Transfer

Conduction

Convection

Radiation

energy can be transferred in three ways

MRSTAV

Conduction

Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy through contact between substances

  • the substances need to be in direct contact in order for the energy to transfer

MRSTAV

Conduction

Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy through contact between substances

  • the particles that are in direct contact with the heat source start to move faster
    • these faster moving particles bump into the particles next to them, transferring energy to them and making them start to move faster
    • in this way, the energy is transferred from particle to particle until the whole substance heats up

Conductors

  • some substances are better conductors than others

substances that do not conduct heat well

substances that conduct heat well

CONDUCTORS

INSULATORS

metal transfers heat quickly

wood does not transfer heat quickly

Formation of Rocks

  • conduction is important in the formation of rocks
    • heat is produced in the core of the Earth and transferred outward towards the crust

MRSTAV

Formation of Rocks

  • within the mantle, rocks are heated to the point that they are liquefied

when this magma reaches the surface, it is called lava and when it solidifies (as it cools), it forms igneous rock

Formation of Rocks

  • rocks (either sedimentary or igneous) that have cooled and formed and are then heated again become able to flow
    • when these rocks cool and solidify, they are called metamorphic rock
