FINAL EXAM EXEMPTION

Seniors may be exempted from a final exam for a full year course (or those in which the student has remained in the same discipline for the entire year such as English, Religion & Math) if they have maintained an 85 average for each of the first three quarters, and have maintained an 85 average through the fourth quarter. Exam exemptions are considered an "end of year senior privilege." Seniors in stand alone semester courses (such as forensics, Holocaust, sociology or Wellness) who have maintained an 85 average for the duration of the semester are also exempt. Seniors who choose to be exempt from the final, should be aware that they will not be eligible for earned honors designation.

To be exempt from final exams, students in AP courses must maintain a minimum of an 80 average through both semesters and take the AP exam. (See AP test policy on slide 5 for more details)

AP TEST POLICY: Students who register for an Advanced Placement class in grades 9-11 must take the AP exam in the Spring to earn credit in the course. Seniors have the option of taking the AP exam or must take the final exam in the class and can not be exempted. These exams cost an average of $100. AP Seminar and Research courses cost more. The test fee is to be paid by the student in February. Some financial assistance is available for those students who are unable to afford the test fee. Students taking 3 or more in a year must take at least 3 AP exams.

Our school greatly values the AP program and has weighted the GPA in accordance with the level of rigor the experience requires. The goal is for all of our students to participate in the entirety of the AP experience which includes the AP test. We recognize that AP exams come with a cost and not all colleges and universities will recognize the AP class as credit bearing which is why paying to take the actual exam is not required by MSC. However, in keeping with the high standards and rigor of our AP program, seniors who do not sit for the AP exam are required to take the course exam at the end of the year regardless of the numerical average in the course.
