Gifted Students

Gifted and Talented (GT) students are those who are identified in grades second through eighth as demonstrating high performance ability or potential in academic and/or artistic areas. Therefore, they require an educational program beyond that normally provided by the general school program in order to achieve their potential.

Purposes of Identification

To find students who display characteristics of Gifted and Talented.

To asses the aptitudes, attributes, and behaviors of each student.

To evaluate each student for the purpose of placement.

HOW ARE STUDENTS IDENTIFIED?

A. REASONING ABILITIES

STUDENTS NEED TO MEET 2 OR 3 DIMENSIONS

UNLESS HE/SHE SCORES 96% OR HIGHER IN THE “TOTAL” SCORE FOR

Dimension A, he/she qualifies with one dimension only.

B. ACHIEVEMENT IN READING AND/OR MATH

C. INTELLECTUAL/ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

    • Students who meet all state requirements will not need to retest next year.

Pull Out Model

Using the pull out model for GT instruction, students will be integrated into all grade level homerooms. Students will come to the GT teachers’ classes and receive GT instruction during the daily FIT class time. Reading and math instruction will alternate weeks.

Our Gifted and Talented teachers are required to complete a training program consisting of two graduate classes focused on nature and needs of GT students and curriculum design for the GT classroom.

Teachers work with instructional supervisors to develop appropriate curriculum for students and have access to resources to ensure your student’s talents are being showcased daily.

    • Curriculum enrichment for Gifted and Talented students in elementary school involves enhancing the South Carolina College and Career Readiness standards to provide challenging and engaging learning experiences.
    • Student work will involve using creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills, as they explore various topics in-depth.
    • The Gifted and Talented program aims to stimulate intellectual growth, nurture talents, and keep gifted students motivated and excited about learning.
