How do dictators come to power?

  • Some use force. This is called a coup.
  • Some inherit it.
  • MANY are/were ELECTED by people (and then keep it by force).

Why do dictators not call themselves dictators?

  • Answers may very. Possible answer:

    • Dictators do not want to be seen as dictators. Perhaps they know that as a dictator their authority to use their power is questionable. They often pretend that their leadership is widely supported by the people.

      • President with a constitution that gives all power to the president
