Why do we have new tests and

what makes them different?

Background

18 of 46

Why transition to new tests?

Track record:

  • 34% of graduates from the class of 2013 who went to public colleges in Colorado needed remediation in at least one class

  • Colorado is only producing 22 college graduates to every 100 students who enter a Colorado high school

19 of 46

Why transition?

  • Colorado Academic Standards were fully implemented in 2013-14.

  • These new and more challenging standards will better prepare our students for college and career.

  • CMAS tests in science, social studies, English language arts and math are aligned to the standards.

  • Science and social studies developed in Colorado

  • English language arts and math developed in collaboration with a consortium of states known as PARCC, or the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career.

20 of 46

How are the tests different?

  • CMAS tests, including PARCC, are aligned to the Colorado Academic Standards

  • Designed to be administered online

  • Feature more interactive, engaging questions

  • Assess knowledge and real world skills included in the standards

21 of 46

TCAP vs. CMAS

22 of 46

Purpose of the tests?

  • Serve as one indicator of student mastery of the grade- level standards by the end of the year

  • Provide information on how students are performing compared to their school, district and state peers. For ELA and math, they will also provide information on how they compare to students in other states

  • Track yearly student growth

  • Allow teachers to see how their students are performing against the standard and identify areas they may need to adjust in their practice in the future

  • Provide school and district comparisons and accountability information for parents, students and the community

PARCC ELA and Math Performance Levels

24 of 46

OOverview

CMAS: PARCC ELA and Math assessments were administered for the first time last spring

  • Grades 3-11 for ELA
  • Grades 3-8 and three high school assessments for math (both pathways)

Over the summer:

  • Performance level standard setting panels met and made recommendations for cut scores
  • Colorado had at least one representative on each panel
  • PARCC Governing Board met to determine final performance levels and cut scores
    • Adopted cut scores within 1-2 standard errors of judgment
    • Adjusted overall performance level framework

25 of 46

New Test, New Baseline

  • These are new tests. Teachers and students need time to get used to them.

  • Initially, scores may be lower, but we expect scores to rise over time.

  • Scores from these tests cannot be compared to Colorado’s previous test scores.

  • These tests are aligned to the Colorado Academic Standards and are testing different things than past tests.

  • This year’s scores will serve as a baseline to measure future student growth.

26 of 46

ONew Framework

  • Does not change the number of students who scored at or above the college and career ready threshold
  • Levels 4 and 5 are the indicators of college and career readiness
  • Three levels below the college and career ready threshold
    • Allows for more differentiation of students
    • Allows for better delineation of progress toward college and career readiness

What are the performance Levels?
