Conservation Translocations

“Conservation translocation is the deliberate movement of organisms from one site for release in another. It must be intended to yield a measurable conservation benefit at the levels of a population, species or ecosystem, and not only provide benefit to translocated individuals.”

Types of translocation

Conservation translocations may be terrestrial, freshwater or marine and will usually fall into one of the following categories:

Population restoration is the intentional movement and release of an organism within its indigenous range to:

      • reintroduce a species
      • reinforce a population

Conservation introduction is the intentional movement and release of an organism outside its indigenous range to promote a particular ecological outcome.

Welsh Code for Conservation Translocations

NRW has developed a Code for Conservation Translocations in Wales (the Code) to provide a framework for developing and considering proposals

  • Be clear about the conservation need and whether it is an appropriate option
  • Develop a plan for the whole lifetime of the translocation
  • Identify and obtain all necessary permissions and licences
  • Understand and account for the biological needs and vulnerabilities of the species
  • Minimise the risk of harm to biodiversity
  • Identify and manage any potential for conflict with human activities
  • Be accountable, transparent, and open
  • Monitor, evaluate and communicate

Discussion

  • What role do you think reintroductions/conservation translocations should play in biodiversity recovery in Wales?
        • Are they key to species recovery?
        • Or can they be a distraction from other conservation activities?

  • Are there any potential risks that we should be concerned about?

  • Priorities for reintroduction – how should these be identified?

  • How can we ensure conservation translocations are undertaken effectively/appropriately?

  • Do you have any comments on the Welsh code?
