Conduct listening/feedback sessions with family-facing groups that the Family and School Community Partnerships (FSCP) Community of Practice members oversee/support..

Revise Family and School Community Partnerships (FSCP) Framework materials to emphasize the connection between FSCP and student engagement.

Develop and publish high-impact district and family-facing materials and trainings that are culturally responsive through an iterative development process with SACPIE.

Leverage CDE’s out-of-school time (OST) programs to improve school day attendance and increase student and family engagement.

Engagement and Attendance Matters

Students who are chronically absent in ninth grade are more likely to disengage, fail courses, and not graduate with their peers.�
Students on NAEP who reported missing more days had lower average scale scores in 4th and 8th grade

Students who attend more regularly in K-1 are more likely to be reading on grade level by 3rd grade.�
Students who are chronically absent in middle school are more likely to disengage and dropout of high school

We wanted to start with an overview of why we have named student engagement as one of the priorities within the strategic plan. And wanted to share a few highlights for why attendance matters. We have good evidence that attendance matters for students across the K-12 continuum. First, there is research showing that students who have higher attendance in PK, K, and 1 are more likely to be reading on grade level by 3rd grade. If we think about all of the structures and patterns for learning that kids are getting when they are in attendance. Yes, they are learning about letter sounds and numeracy but imagine all of the other things you see in a great K classroom in how kids learn to interact with adults and peers, ask questions, present information, and on and on. Second, research has shown similar results in middle grades, where students who are chronically absent (missing more than 10% of school) are more likely to start to disengage and more likely to drop out of high school. And in high school, there is evidence that students who are chronically absent are more likely to fail courses and not graduation. And on the flip side, students with high attendance in 9th grade (greater than 95%) are almost all graduating from high school four years later. There are patterns of attendance that allow a student to engage with content and learning and for staff to understand what students need.

And lastly, there is an optional survey that is given with NAEP assessments and in the most recent 2024 scores, students who reported missing more days of school had lower average scale scores in reading and a higher percentage below basic.

Overall, we see that strong patterns of attendance matter for students learning.

We are setting an ambitious goal to reduce chronic absenteeism by 50% from its pandemic high of 35.5% in 2021-2022.

Learn and share with other Colorado participants

Receive tools and resources to support efforts

Given the high rates of chronic absenteeism that we have seen in Colorado and across the country post pandemic, Colorado has joined with 14 other states who have made a public commitment to reducing our rates by 50% in five years. This commitment is based on the idea that our improvement in attendance and engagement in learning is directly connected to many of our other goals for students to be able to demonstrate academically, graduate, and be prepared for what’s next. We have made good progress in the first two years since our pandemic high and have work to do to continue this progress to a 50% reduction.

In addition, we are asking schools and districts who are interested to make this commitment with us and join our attendance campaign. We see this as a way to elevate the importance of this issue, share resources among districts, and highlight the progress that is being made to improve engagement.
