Story Time
Treasure Island: Part 12
The Story Last Time
Since Jim has become separated from the rest of his friends, Doctor Livesey is telling the story now.
Dr. Livesey told the story of how they escaped from the ship, and ran to the island.
The pirates chased them, but then they fired on the pirates, and then the pirates ran.
But, then, from out of the bushes, a pistol sound was heard.
And poor Tom Redruth (one of the Squire’s men) was hit.
Now, lads!
Once we reached the top of the hill, we turned and fired our guns.
We killed one, and caused the others to run away.
At first we were happy,
but then we heard a pistol fire from in the bushes
bush
UNGGHHH!
Tom!!
And poor Tom Redruth stumbled,
and then fell to the ground.
The Squire and I returned the shots, even though we couldn’t see any of the pirates
but looking out the side of my eye,
I could see that it was all over for poor Tom.
You’ll be going home, Tom, my man.
I wish I… had a chance...to fight them first… with my gun, sir.
And after asking that a prayer be read...
prayer
Tom Redruth died.
Captain Smollett had brought a lot of things from the ship in the large pockets of his sea-coat.
pockets
A bible,
a coil of rope
pen and ink
and the British flag
And then climbing on the roof
He put up the British flag.
Putting up the flag seemed to calm him down a lot.
calm down
and he went in the roundhouse and began counting the supplies as if nothing else existed.
supplies
Hello, the fort! Doctor! Squire! Captain!
It’s Jim Hawkins!
Jim, Boy--It’s good to see you again, lad.
lad=boy
We were afraid we’d lost you, Jim.
Where have you been, lad?
And now, I, Jim, will pick up the rest of the story from here.
I told them all about my adventures, and how I had met Ben Gunn on the island.
And Ben Gunn wishes to meet with any of you gentleman
and he has something of great importance to ask you about!
But any decisions were put off till later,
decision
as we buried poor Tom Redruth in a simple grave
burying
grave
God rest his soul, gentlemen.
rest his soul=rest in peace
Amen to that, sir.
amen=I agree
and then a meeting was held in the roundhouse to discuss plans for our future.
This is the first ship I ever lost, gentlemen--and I want it back!
There were 19 pirates before. But after the fighting, they only have 15 left.
And at least two of them are wounded!
wounded
Then every chance you have to attack them--take it!
Only stay out of danger yourselves!
There are two things that will help us, Captain.
First of all, there’s a lot of sickness and diseases in the marshes.
and they have no medicine.
Secondly they love drinking rum,
and the rum will make them sick.
With that, the meeting ended,
and we all caught some greatly needed sleep.
Only to awake the next morning to sunlight streaming into the roundhouse,
and the sound of voices calling...
Flag of truce, sir! It’s Silver!
truce=peace
Keep your places men! Ten to one, this is a trick!
Why Captain--it’s a flag of truce we’re carrying!
It’s me, Captain Silver, and I want to come in to make peace, if you please.
Captain Silver? I don’t know him. Who’s he?
Me sir. The crew have chosen me Captain
--after you left us, sir.
But we want peace.
All I ask is your word, Captain, to let me in safe and sound, and then let me out again when we’ve finished talking
word=promise
