The Grade 5 Model

  • Grade 5 classrooms are located in their own wing of the building with a dedicated homeroom.
  • Grade 5 has a dedicated staff of 6 classroom teachers and one special educator.
  • Grade 5 incorporates a second ELA/Math block to build essential skills.
  • Contact Time Block: Band/Chorus and/or extra support and enrichment.
  • Grade 5 has their own lunch period and has a snack recess.
  • All students are provided with a chromebook.

Transition!

You should expect:

  • Emphasis on class sizes in vicinity of 20 students per class; Homeroom
  • Grade 5 - “A School Within A School” Model
  • Targeted support if a student is struggling
  • Engaging and active classes that value social-emotional learning needs
  • Grade 4 students visit WJHS on June 6

We put a great deal of effort into an effective transition from Wells Elementary School to Wells Junior High School

Morning Arrival & Afternoon Pickup

  • Students should arrive at WJHS no earlier than 7:15. Classrooms open at 7:20am. Students arriving between 7:15 and 7:20 may report to the cafeteria, where breakfast is available.

  • Afternoon pickup is in the same location as drop off.

  • Any student arriving after 7:30 a.m. should be dropped off at the main office entry point on the Route 1 side of the campus.

What Does The Schedule for Grade 5 Prioritize:

  • School Day: 7:30am - 1:50pm. Doors open at 7:15am for morning drop-off.
  • Recess breaks up morning academic sessions

    • Mappin’ Mondays” - focus on geography terms, atlas work, US 50 states and capitals.
    • Newsday Tuesdays” - current events, Scholastic News, NEWSELA
    • Wayback Wednesdays / Throwback Thursdays” - focus on Native Americans, Explorers, 13 Colonies
    • Freedom Fridays” - events leading up to and including the American Revolution

Our Allied Art courses meet for 6 weeks. Students rotate through the courses listed. In addition, they have an opportunity for Band/Chorus through contact time.

What is it? → A six week rotation between the six offerings of Allied Arts, which encompass a engaging variety of specialist classes

Why? → Allied Arts provide students with a well-rounded course selection to develop lifelong learning, boost self-esteem, foster visual and performing art skills, and support a holistic approach to wellness and fitness

What classes are there? → Health, Art, (PE 1), STEM, Music, PE (2)*

Information From the School Nurse

Maine Law allows students to self-carry asthma inhalers and Epi-pens with a

Maine Allergy Action Plan

Maine Asthma Plan

Signed by a parent / guardian and the healthcare provider on file with nurse.

Plans must be renewed every school year.

Medication Policy

All other medications administered at school must be given through the nurse. This includes OTC’s and prescriptions.

  • Policy and forms may be found on the WJHS school nurse web page or call the nurse at 641-6923
  • Students should not be carrying these medications at school.
  • Please feel free to call the nurse anytime if you have health questions or concerns.
