Extreme Earth|Year 6|Geography

Cause and Impact

Cause of a VOLCANO:

Positioned on the edges of tectonic plates. Pressure forms and pushes magma up through the surface

Impact of a VOLCANO:

Destruction of wildlife and homes/buildings. Gas and Ash can impact on breathing. High death toll around populated regions.

Over years the soil can become nutrient rich for crops.

Cause of a TSUNAMI:

Tectonic plates slip/grind together causing an earthquake underwater. The shock creates a powerful wave. Death toll.

Impact of a TSUNAMI:

Destruction of wildlife and buildings. High death toll around populated regions. (2004 example -)

Cause of an EARTHQUAKE:

Tectonic plates slip/grind together causing the earth to shake.

Impact of an EARTHQUAKE

Destruction of wildlife and buildings. High Death Toll

Cause of a DROUGHT:

Change of wind patterns OR man made by destruction of trees and building dams OR a long period of hot weather

Impact of a DROUGHT:

Environmental forest fires. Crops and animals die. Lack of water for humans to drink. High death toll

Key Diagram and labels

Key words

Climate

Climate it the long term pattern of weather in a particular area.

Tectonic plates

· segments of the Earth’s crust that move in relation to one another which can cause earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.

Active volcano

an active volcano is one that has erupted recently, and there is the possibility that it may erupt again.

Dormant volcano

a dormant volcano is one that has not erupted for a long time, however, it may still erupt in the future.

Extinct Volcano

· an extinct volcano is one which hasn’t erupted in at least 10,000 years, and that scientists don’t think will erupt again for a very long time.
