Why does evil and suffering exist?

“The problem of evil is the question of how to reconcile the existence of evil and suffering with an omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and omniscient God. There are currently differing definitions of these concepts. The best known presentation of the problem is attributed to the Greek philosopher Epicurus.”

Can God be good with the reality of evil?

Philosopher Epicuro wrestled with the potential coexistence of evil and suffering and one all-powerful, all-knowing, all good/loving God:

How do different religions & worldviews view God?

(Summary on next slide)

11

12

13 of 80

Can all religions be right?

How can…

  • God be both impersonal/unknowable (Islam) and personal/knowable (Christianity/Judaism)?
  • God be both many gods (Hinduism/paganism) and one God (Christianity/Judaism)?
  • God be both nonexistent (Buddhism/Atheism) and existent (Most religions)
  • God be both myself (New Age Selfism) and outside of myself (Most religions)?

Short answer: If we believe in consistent, knowable truth that is above and beyond mankind then it’s illogical for the higher power to be contradictory. If we don’t believe in truth, then everything is random chance and it doesn’t matter anyways.

Christianity

4 Biblical characteristics of God that CANNOT be contradicted by anything else in the Bible if Christianity is true:

  • Good: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 NIV
  • Great: “...the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4 NIV “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” Psalms 34:7 NIV
  • Glorious: “This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24 ESV “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.” Psalms 33:6 NIV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-7G6CwV1js
  • Gracious: “I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 11:19 NIV “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17 NIV

Liberal churches avoid the Biblical topic of God’s anger and wrath, so we never got a full picture of the gospel growing up, which is why people walk away from the church. This episode illustrates the importance of understanding this concept and why Christ offers us so much hope: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/morning-mindset-daily-christian-devotional/id1322666339#episodeGuid=5b2962dc-10d9-4ef0-b643-c8da70f8620

Who has claimed to be God?

Many individuals and groups throughout history have claimed divinity, or were elevated to divine status by others. The list includes: Alexander the Great, Aldolf Hitler, Jim Jones, Mother Theresa, Joseph Kony, George Washington, Buddah, Homer, Pharoahs, Mother Mary, Jesus, etc. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_who_have_been_considered_deities

  • How do we know who the believe and disbelieve?
  • Do any of these claims to divinity still maintain legitimacy today?

Jesus is the only human who claimed to be God who maintains legitimacy. So who is Jesus?

Part Two: Who Is Jesus?

30

31 of 80

Can we know who Jesus really is? If so how?

Jesus was a real historical figure as much as was Genghis Khan, Abe Lincoln, Adolf Hitler, or Alexander the Great.

Jesus made some bold claims that have been recorded in various texts, secular and religious, and was executed for those claims at the hands of Pontius Pilate of Rome by demand of the Jewish religious leaders.

Credible secular, Christian, Muslim, and Jewish scholars all conclude that Jesus’ crucifixion under Pontious Pilate was one of the most certain events in world history.

So who really was the historical and literal Jesus who walked this earth? Was he a legend, coerced, mistaken, poet, joker, mentally ill, or Lord?

31

32 of 80

Is the Bible the only historical source about Jesus?

There are many historical sources that corroborate the Bible’s basic storyline about Jesus’s life, death, and the explosion/persecution of early Christians that followed.

Again from a secular source “This manuscript (P52) has generally been dated to ca. A.D. 125. This fact alone proved that the original Gospel of John was written earlier, viz. in the first century A.D., as had always been upheld by conservative scholars.” https://library.duke.edu/rubenstein/scriptorium/papyrus/texts/manuscripts.html

Ancient manuscript of the Gospel of Luke and John, already compiled together, since this is a page showing the last verses and the first verses of John. AD 200!

34

35 of 80

What do we know about the Bible?

Based off historical accounts and confirmed by archeology, the New Testament gospels were written by eyewitnesses during the first century AD. Date proximity to Christ is critical for trustworthiness because proximity does not allow legends to develop or accounts to be altered, as actual witnesses were still alive to refute false/altered accounts.

How should we read and interpret the Bible?

The Bible is a collaboration of hundreds of authors over thousands of years, all proclaiming one central, unified message about God’s character.

The danger of viewing the Bible as errant or simply a book of guidelines/principals is that we become tempted to pick and choose from it what we believe therefore playing god ourselves.

Was Jesus Liar, Lunatic, or Lord?

A) Did Jesus really claim to be God?

  • Reference Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus by Nabeel Qureshi
  • Mark 2:6-12
  • “When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭5:20-24‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬
  • “saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭21:2-3‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬

40

41 of 80

Was Jesus Liar, Lunatic, or Lord?

B) Did Jesus speak freely?

  • Mark 12: 13-14
  • Is there evidence that Jesus was influenced by religious or government authorities? Or was His ultimate authority God?
  • Crowd’s reaction right after Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5:28-29
  • Matthew 21:23-27

41

42 of 80

Was Jesus Liar, Lunatic, or Lord?

C) Was Jesus fully informed?

  • Interesting article that summarizes every reference that Jesus made to Old Testament books during his ministry. Turns out it’s the vast majority of them which increases their legitimacy. The only books Jesus doesn’t reference are the history books and minor prophets. https://jewsforjesus.org/answers/jesus-references-to-old-testament-scriptures
  • Well versed in the Jewish and Roman law and in the loop with current political events in Luke 20:20-26

42

43 of 80

Was Jesus Liar, Lunatic, or Lord?

D) Did Jesus really believe what he was saying?

  • “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” ‭‭John‬ ‭14:6‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬
  • Matthew 27:11-14: Does someone die for a lie? Let along endure the suffering of crucifixion?

43

Was Jesus Liar, Lunatic, or Lord?

E) Was Jesus using humor?

  • Very serious passages about attitudes towards treatment of the temple, end times, and the Pharisees.
  • Matthew 27:11-14: Does someone die for a joke? Let along endure the suffering of crucifixion?

44

Was Jesus Liar, Lunatic, or Lord?

F) Was Jesus using a metaphor?

Jesus often did speak in parables to make a point to His followers, but does that mean his life was a metaphor? Does one die for a metaphor?

45

46 of 80

Was Jesus Liar, Lunatic, or Lord?

G) Was Jesus mentally sound?

  • Jesus’ logic and quick thinking often kept the Pharisees on their heels. John 8:2-11
  • At times, the crowds thought Jesus was crazy due to his bold claims, but there was always a contingent that continued to follow him. John 6:60-71

46

47 of 80

Was Jesus Liar, Lunatic, or Lord?

H) Did Jesus suffer from occasional delusions?

  • People throughout Jesus’ ministry often left due to His difficult countercultural teachings (John 6:60-71).
  • Jesus driving out demons into pigs scared some people (Luke 8:34-37).
  • But some people thought he was worth following and dying for. Which camp was better informed? John 7:40-44

47

48 of 80

Was Jesus Liar, Lunatic, or Lord?

I) Is who Jesus claimed to be the most likely interpretation of the facts?

48

49 of 80

What can we conclude about Jesus’ life?

If we can conclude that we have an ability to accurately understand Jesus’s life from our modern perspective, we can address some big questions about Him. Our beliefs must come from historical accounts of those who witnessed Jesus’ life.

We must pick Liar, Lunaric, or Lord. Notice that “good teacher” is not an option for Jesus because if He really claims to be God then he is elevated to a whole nother category - Liar, Lunaric, or Lord.

How do we interpret the Bible in light of everything we’ve explored? Every individual must decide for themselves (Joshua 24:15). Choose wisely!

What does BC and AD mean and why do we live in AD times on our calendar?

Source: https://www.gotquestions.org/BC-AD.html

“It is commonly thought that B.C. stands for “before Christ” and A.D. stands for “after death.” This is only half correct. How could the year 1 B.C. have been “before Christ” and A.D. 1 been “after death”? B.C. does stand for “before Christ.” A.D. actually stands for the Latin phrase anno domini, which means “in the year of our Lord.” The B.C./A.D. dating system is not taught in the Bible. It actually was not fully implemented and accepted until several centuries after Jesus’ death. It is interesting to note that the purpose of the B.C./A.D. dating system was to make the birth of Jesus Christ the dividing point of world history. However, when the B.C./A.D. system was being calculated, they actually made a mistake in pinpointing the year of Jesus’ birth. Scholars later discovered that Jesus was actually born around 6—4 B.C., not A.D. 1. That is not the crucial issue. The birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Christ are the “turning points” in world history. It is fitting, therefore, that Jesus Christ is the separation of “old” and “new.” B.C. was “before Christ,” and since His birth, we have been living “in the year of our Lord.” Viewing our era as “the year of our Lord” is appropriate. Philippians 2:10–11 says, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” In recent times, there has been a push to replace the B.C. and A.D. labels with B.C.E and C.E., meaning “before common era” and “common era,” respectively. The change is simply one of semantics—that is, AD 100 is the same as 100 CE; all that changes is the label. The advocates of the switch from BC/AD to BCE/CE say that the newer designations are better in that they are devoid of religious connotation and thus prevent offending other cultures and religions who may not see Jesus as “Lord.” The irony, of course, is that what distinguishes B.C.E from C.E. is still the life and times of Jesus Christ.”

Eastern cultures have historically and currently teach a doctrine that sin is passed down generationally. This belief manifests in widespread guilt, shame, and fear. Read Ezekiel 18 to see how Christianity views this topic differently https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_views_on_sin

Deuteronomy 5:9-10 “You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

Are there questions Christianity can’t answer?

71

What evidence exists for your deity that doesn’t exist for any others?

    • The Bible is the standard of historical truth and has be supported by other secular historical accounts, archaeology, etc.
    • Jesus was a real historical figure. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection were witnessed and documented by many different sources and those sources must be evaluated to determine if the resurrection happened. ***If the resurrection didn’t happen, the rest of Christianity is a pointless fraud.***

Why would a perfect diety’s divinely inspired work not be perfect and transcendent?

    • Free will and autonomy are required for real relationship. God took the “risk” (knowing the outcome so not really a risk) of granting free will and autonomy knowing mankind would abuse it. But before creation he has planned to send Jesus to be just and justifier for those who would repent of their rejection of God. God delivered redemption through Christ and promises coming restoration. However, those who continue to reject God will miss out on his perfect and transcendent restoration. What separates your faith from the faith of those who follow another religion

72 of 80

Are there questions Christianity can’t answer?

72

Religion is largely determined by culture and geography. Why would your God choose only to save those who live in certain areas?

    • God’s salvation is revealed to mankind through general (nature, conscience, etc.) and specific (Jesus, prophets, dreams) revelation. All those who are willing to look for God’s salvation will find it. No one will stand before God (Col 3:25) and be able to complain that they never had a fair chance to receive God’s salvation.

Can you accurately and completely define the following? God, Soul, Faith, Spirit.

    • God is love
    • Human beings are mental (brain, cognition), physical (physical body), and spiritual (conscience, soul). What separates mankind from animals is the spiritual component which calls us to a higher power and to purpose which goes beyond our physical life. The soul is the piece of us that will live on past this physical existence into eternity.

Who or what created God?

    • God is the beginning and end, alpha and omega. “In the beginning was God.” God is infinite and everlasting beyond time and space - He created time and space. Therefore, he has always and will always exist and was not created by anyone or anything. He himself created everything including time and space.

Would you kill your only son if God asked you?

    • Central question we must ask: do I own my son or does God own my son? Who created my son?
    • Genesis account of Abraham runs do counter to our intuition. How can God ask Abraham to sacrifice his son? How can Abraham be willing to kill his son for God? But we see at the end of the account that God didn’t really want Abraham to kill his son, but rather complete and absolute trust in His goodness, sovereignty, and plan. He ends up providing a ram as a sacrifice instead of Abraham’s son,
