Humanity's relationship with technology

Hello, we are students from the 2nd Gymnasio of Samos, Greece and we will present you our work on positives that technology can offer in our lives, as well as its problematic aspects. In addition, we will refer to real applications of robotics that improve productivity or our daily life in general.

Prologue…

  • Nowadays technology is evolving day by day. Sometimes we have positive results and other times we have negative results.

  • Technology evolves with the purpose of facilitating the daily life of man, man accepts it, and tries to make it a part of himself and evolve it. Some of the challenges humanity decides to face is that maybe in the next few years AI robots will outnumber the population in relation to humans or that robots will kill us. These are all rumors about the robot and the technology as we mentioned above the technology is meant to facilitate the daily life of man and only the good.

pros of technology

  • Technology has improved the way of travelers modern technologies carry the journey over long distances as transportation nowadays is for the life of man and the business world whereas in the past it was more costly and slow moving.
  • With technology visits education has come a long way because of computers students can learn on a global scale without even leaving their classrooms.
  • In recent years, the way we communicate has been simplified as modern technology has developed many technological tools such as mobile phones and tablets that connect to the internet and allow people to communicate with the whole world.
  • Thanks to technology in factories machines can produce as efficiently as humans or even better in some industries and this brings profits to the entrepreneur as you don't have to pay a lot of staff.

Disadvantages of technology 1/2

  • Modern technology is the reason for the increase in wars and conflicts as it helps in the production of modern weapons of war that cause great damage to society.
  • Another negative aspect of technology is social isolation where people of all ages surf the internet for hours ignoring real life and their problems no longer needing to socialize which further leads to loneliness and depression.
  • The rapid development of technology in the industrial sector has caused high rates of unemployment as machines have replaced most of the human resources in businesses.

Disadvantages of technology 2/2

  • A frequent phenomenon observed in both teenagers and adults is the increased dependence on modern technology tools, resulting in them becoming addicted to them and limiting their creativity.

  • Robots are gradually entering every aspect of our lives. From industrial production to our daily lives, in our homes, even as domestic helpers. What will be the developments in this field in the next years?

  • Although we are seeing some amazing new technologies emerge, most people are disappointed. Headlines in the news are full of exclamation points (!!), but households are not. As William Gibson has said about new technologies “the future is already here, it’s just not yet equally distributed/shared to all”.

Some things about artificial intelligence…

Artificial intelligence is the ability of a machine to reproduce the cognitive functions of a human (learning, planning, creativity). For example, a computer receives data, processes it and responds based on it. Artificial intelligence systems are capable of adapting their behavior and solving problems autonomously.

1. Online shopping and advertising

Artificial intelligence has an extremely important role to play in the commerce industry. It is mainly used to provide personalized recomme- ndations for example based on previous searches and purchases.

Artificial intelligence also plays an extremely important role in the commerce industry, as it is used for product optimization, inventory planning, logistics.

2. Personal and digital assistants

Smartphones use artificial intelligence to provide optimized and personalized settings to their users. The virtual assistant acts as the user's personal secretary: answers questions, provides recommendations, reminds of meetings. It is also an electronic conversationalist that adapts to the individual characteristics of a particular person, taking into account the user's environment, the range of his interests and his habits.

3. Smart homes, cities, infrastructure

Smart cities rely on intelligent traffic numbering systems to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion. In smart homes, thermostats analyze our behavior in order to save energy. In addition , the electronic devices at home are connected to the mobile phone and the internet, so you can give commands from your mobile phone and they will execute them.

4. Artificial intelligence against covid19

In the case of the covid 19 pandemic artificial intelligence was used in thermal imaging devices in airports and elsewhere. in addition it can help monitor the spread of the virus by providing data. In medicine, AI can contribute to the effective diagnosis of the coronavirus through the use of algorithms that study AI scans of the chest.

5. Fighting misinformation

Some artificial intelligence applications can help detect fake news and disinformation in social networks by identifying specific words and phrases as well as reliable sources of information.

6. Self-driving cars

Self-driving cars will Work and keep moving by using lots of sensor data, learning how to handle traffic and making decisions in real time. Also known as autonomous vehicles, these cars use AI technology and machine learning to get around without the passenger having to take control at any time.

Robots 1/2

We believe that robots will be able to do incredible, useful things in the world, without emotions and without the capacity for self-action, that is, without complete autonomy and some desire to act independently. These are such difficult technical problems that they are at least 30 years away.

Robots 2/2

  • We also need robots in areas such as aged care and health, where we have shortages of skilled labour.

  • Even in industry, where productivity has been limited over the past 30 years. Robots will be able to help take on difficult, dangerous tasks, leaving humans to engage more with the social aspects of their work.

In which sectors will the robots be used the most?

In any field that has boring, “dirty” and dangerous tasks. Heavy lifting, repetitive actions or anything else that involves people working on ladders or cranes. Robots are gradually making the workplace safer through the use of automation. I also appreciate that we can make jobs more enjoyable.
