  • The first black woman president of the APA
  • Two books, 32 publications, and 24 awards, she is both highly decorated and well-deserved in her notoriety and far-reaching impact on the field.

  • Her dissertation focused on Black high school students’ decisions about what type of college they chose to attend
  • The Key finding indicated that significant demographic and personality variables contributed to their decision-making
  • Understanding these findings may be used in today’s classroom for students to understand their decision-making process and how that determines their success.

Her dissertation research focused on Black students and their decision about what type of college to attend, a Predominantly White College (Predominantly White College) versus a Predominantly Black College (Predominantly Black College).

  • Purpose: Look at factors that might lead Black students to choose a PWC versus PBC.

  • Hypothesis: College choice decision is dependent on three factors

  • Results: There are significant demographic and personality variables that contribute to the college choice of these Black students.

  • Study compared the effects of three different types of counseling on the academic achievement levels of black women in a small liberal arts college setting
  • Sought to understand the variables associated with low achievement in black women in liberal arts setting and if different methods of counselings would lead to improvement in academic achievement
  • Experimental groups included group counseling with cognitive orientation, affective orientation,and individual counseling

  • Study found that short-term counseling has little effect on the achievement, self-concept, study habits and attitudes, or stated personal problems of low achieving students in the study

  • Modern research shows that receiving a higher number of counseling sessions predicted higher GPAS and increased the likelihood of graduation.

  • Her work guided future research examining factors that influence academic achievement in college students and educational settings.

  • Born on 24th February 1932, Pawnee County, Oklahoma
  • Received her Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology degree from Oklahoma State University in 1976
  • Extensive professional contributions to mental health services for Native American communities. Served as the Chief of the Mental Health Branch in the Indian Health Service (IHS), overseeing 17 tribal mental health programs across 14 states.

  • Dissertation finding: According to self- and teacher-ratings, there was a strong correlation between leadership qualities and an internal locus of control among American Indian youth. However, peer ratings did not show a significant correlation.
