Disaster Preparedness.

  • Allows governing bodies to perform detailed risk assessments to determine where a community is most vulnerable.
  • Provides the information needed to create safe and effective evacuation and aid distribution plans.

Disaster Response.

  • It is important to respond quickly and effectively.
  • Real time locating systems determine the state of infrastructure within communities, which affects how people and supplies can move through the area.
  • These systems are vital for locating people who may be displaced or in danger in the aftermath of an emergency.

Why is this important?

December’s Project: Hatteras Island, NC

Hi TeenMaptivists! Help us map buildings and roads in Cape Hatteras in the Outer banks of North Carolina. Hatteras is an especially vulnerable community due to sea level rise, increased hurricane activity, and coastal erosion. These environmental factors lead to increased flooding, which has been responsible for wiping entire homes out into the sea. Mapping building and road features in this area helps local organizations prepare for potential disasters, and more easily provide aid and assistance in the event that natural disaster does occur.
