What Literature Informs us about AI literacy?

AI Literacy in K-12 Education

  • UNESCO (2022 & 2023) emphasizes the importance of integrating AI competencies into national curricula to prepare students for an AI-driven future.

  • UNESCO developed AI competency frameworks for teachers and students in 2023.

  • The World Economic Forum emphasizes that schools must prepare students to become critical and ethical users of AI (2024).

  • The OECD (2025) plans to introduce Media and Artificial Intelligence Literacy (MAIL) in the PISA assessment from 2029 to evaluate students’ AI proficiency.

  • EU with OECD has developed AI literacy framework for primary and secondary education (European Commission, 2025).

Implementations

  • Several countries, including China, Estonia, Singapore, South Koria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), have already formally integrated AI literacy into their K-12 school curricula (UNESCO, 2022).
  • ‘Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools’ is integrated into Australian schools (Department of Education, 2023).

    • According to a 2024 Statista survey, 86% of students reported using AI tools for schoolwork.

    • Approximately 44% of children actively engage with generative AI, with 54% utilizing it for schoolwork or homework (Artificial Intelligence Statistics: Insights and Trends in 2025).

  • The 2023 Softlink School Library Survey in Australia found that school library professionals see AI as highly promising—especially for boosting students’ critical thinking and information retrieval through integration with information literacy programs.

  • As Generative AI becomes more embedded in K–12 education, the role of school librarians is undergoing major transformation (Oddone et al., 2024).

  • Hossain (2025) and Hutchinson (2024) emphasize that school librarians must move past reluctance or uncertainty and take the lead in guiding students and teachers through AI's ethical, pedagogical and technical challenges.
