Secondary Arms: Build Times
(recorded at WI press build 2014-06-17 through 06-20)
Build completed by two welding novices. An expert builder could probably cut these times in half.
Secondary Arm welding:
Inventory & orientation: 3:30pm - 3:55pm (25 min)
Arm1 - Tack welding: 3:55pm - 4:20pm (25 min)
Arm1 - Full welding: 4:20pm - 5:00pm (45 min)
Arm2 - Tack welding: 11:15am - 11:30am (15 min)
Arm2 - Full welding: 11:30am - 12:05pm (35 min)
Subtotal: 2 hrs 25 min
Leg Tube cutting & welding:
Inventory & Cutting: 1:30pm - 2:40pm (1hr 10 min)
Filing & prepping tubes: 2:40pm - 3:10pm (30 min)
Welding-on nuts: 3:30pm - 3:55pm (25 min)
Grinding: 4:00pm - 4:30pm (30 min)
Subtotal: 3 hr 35 min
Leg Tube attachment:
Welding: 10:00am - 10:45am (45 min)
Grinding: 10:45am - 11:45pm (60 min)
Subtotal: 1 hr 45 min
TOTAL: 7 hrs 45 min
Secondary Arms
1) Stand both arms back to back. This will help create the needed 90° angle.
2) While both arms support each other, measure one 90° and check the second 90°.
3) To keep these angles from moving weld 3 temporary supports. These are CNC cut, and location notches for them are also already cut.
4) Start the welding process by tacking and then welding 2%.
5) Grind off temporary supports.
6) Continue the weld to 50%.
Tolerance Note: The arms are purely structural components for the brick press. They do not affect the quality of the bricks and therefore the welding does not have to be perfect.
“If you don’t have a flat work surface, you may need to do one arm at a time”
“NOTE: Tack weld on one side first, then flip the arm over and start your full welds opposite the tacks”

Cutting From Stock (preassembly)...
All components in the arms module are prefab and ready to weld except the secondary arm tubular pieces and the primary arm pins. The secondary arm tubular pieces have to be cut from 2 ½”x 2 ½” x 3/16” square tubing stock. We will need 8 6”lengths.
Cut square tubing to size with the abrasive saw (or liquid cooled bandsaw). Be sure to grind sharp edges when finished.
1) cut eight 6-inch-lengths of 2”x 2” x ¼”-thick steel tube (from about ~50” stock) (be sure to use the correct size - make sure to choose the larger 2x2 tube stock and that the smaller leg pieces will fit inside it)
Drilling: Leg Tube
1) Drill 1” hole with the annular cutter 3” down through one side of the 6” long 2”x 1/4” square tubing. Repeat for all eight pieces.
2) Caution: Do not drill on the side of tubing with the welding seam.
3) Hole does not have to be perfectly centered

⌀1” Hole

Secondary Arms: Leg Tube
1) Nut should be welded to the tubing horizontally on a welding table.
2) Place a 3” long ¾” bolt through the nut before you begin welding. This ensures that the bolts will be properly aligned before you begin welding.
3) Complete the weld.
4) Each step should be repeated 4 times.
Note: Only the nut is welded to the tubular member. The bolt is free and just a measurement aid.
Weld
Secondary Arms
1) Orient the secondary arms
2) Line the first leg tube piece up with the notches on the secondary arm.
3) Create 90° between welded secondary arm and the first leg tube piece.
3) Tack weld initially and continue with the complete weld.
4) Repeat steps 2 - 4 for all four leg tube pieces.
Note: Leg tube overhang should always be located on the bottom.

Arms: Attachment
Lift the primary arms onto the secondary arms.
Place primary arms on secondary arms on a stable, flat surface.
Insert bolt and attach washer, lock washer, and nut in each of the six locations marked.
Attach additional bolts, washers, lock washers, and nuts loosely in all holes on A1 and A2
