Prologue- Original

Two households, both alike in dignity,

In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,

From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,

Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

From forth the fatal loins of these two foes

A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;

Whose misadventured piteous overthrows

Doth with their death bury their parents' strife.

The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love,

And the continuance of their parents' rage,

Which, but their children's end, nought could remove,

Is now the two hours' traffic of our stage;

The which, if you with patient ears attend,

What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.

36 of 165

Prologue- Rewrite

Two families, both of the same social standing

The play takes place in Verona, Italy

The two families have an old hatred towards each other, and it leads to new violence

Once level-headed citizens fight and there are consequences

These two enemies each had children

Their children were destined to fall in love and commit suicide

Their unlucky tragic actions

End the families’ feud through their deaths

The events of the story lead to their death

And their parents’ ongoing feud

Which would never end without the death of their children

Is what you’ll see over the course of this two hour play

And if you’re patient and listen carefully

What we’ve missed in the Prologue, you’ll see in the play

Then, Romeo will take her from the tomb and together, they can escape to Mantua.

95 of 165

Love is a violent and overpowering force that supersedes all other values, loyalties, or emotions.

Only in death can people appreciate what they had and what they lost.

Social institutions such as family, religion, and marriage can create obstacles for people, which in turn may cause them to act in a negative way.

Most people are conflicted between acting responsibly and following their desires and passions.

Some outcomes are unavoidable and fate plays a major role in people’s lives.

Nothing can keep people apart who are truly in love with each other, especially if they are willing to die in order to be together.

Fate should not replace personal responsibility because by not taking action in life, it will end in failure and disappointment.
