Chapter 1

Ms. Flask

Interesting Word(s)

“the community” (Lowry 1)

The citizens don’t have a collective name or group identity beyond the basic…so maybe nothing is special

“He will be released” (Lowry 3)

People are amused by the idea that a mistake results in release

Big Idea

Conformity

“..they didn’t obey at all…I felt so angry at him” (Lowry 7)

Lily is upset at noncompliance with rules to the point of anger.

Pose a Question

Why do you think Jonas was so careful about language? How important is it to choose the right words in our society?

Impactful Moment

The most important moment from this chapter is Jonas recounting his fear and responses to the “unidentified aircraft” that “had overflown the community” (Lowry 1). This shows Jonas’ preciseness in language, that he is constantly trying to not only be precise in his thoughts but also in how he talks to others--that he always conforms.

Essential Question

What are the dangers of conformity?

Jonas is limited in his language to express himself. He cannot just pick what feels right in the context, but what is acceptable by the community standards.

7 of 29

Chapter 2

Alexander Peredreev

Interesting Word(s)

Committee of Elders (It was a secret selection, made by the leaders of the community, the Committee of Elders) (Lowry 18,19)

Nurturers (They had been brought to the stage by the Nurturers) (Lowry 15,16

Receiver (It would have to go, eventually, to The Receiver for a decision. The Receiver was the most important Elder.(Lowry 17)

Big Idea

The Big idea of this chapter would be how getting your assignment isn’t that bad as Jonas thinks for example his dad said that he already kinda knew what his assignment would be (Lowry 18,19)

Pose a Question

Why do you think the Committee of Elders pick the assignment for everybody how come the normal people can pick their assignment.

Impactful Moment

One of the Impactful moments in this chapter would be how his dad tries to comfort Jonas from worrying about his future assignment for his life. (Lowry 17,24)

Essential Question

What are the dangers of conformity?

One of the dangers could be how nobody can pick what they want to do unless you work hard for it but that is very uncommon for example Jonas's mother said something like that the job was fun for 3 years then the rest of your life it is very hard labor. And i think it would be hard to fit in with other people because mostly all the people in that job were forced to do their assignment so it would be hard to fit in

8 of 29

Chapter 3

Ms. Flask

Interesting Word(s)

“chastise” (25)

Lowry did not select the word correct; seems harsher than just giving a simple reminder on what is expected

Big Idea

Conformity

“...considered rude to call attention to things that were unsettling or different about individuals” (26).

Constant adherence to the rules shows that Jonas struggles with his knowledge and doing what is expected of him.

Pose a Question

Why is Jonas, the rule follower, so compelled to break a rule? What does that show about his situation in the community? Does this reveal something about his personality or his thought patterns? Can this hint at future issues he may have with conformity/compliance?

Impactful Moment

The announcement/reminder “THAT OBJECTS ARE NOT TO BE REMOVED FROM THE RECREATION AREA” (29). This event was humiliating for Jonas and it is a source of his constant thoughts about how to respond to not only the apple changing but how he does not quite fit in.

Essential Question

Conformity, and the need to be seen as part of the group, seems to create conflict for Jonas. He cannot discuss his “bewilderment” of the apple and his reminder not to take snacks from the recreation area (29). He is isolated because he is trying to conform.

9 of 29

Chapter 4

Peter

Interesting Word(s)

“Dwellings” (34)

Used to describe houses, which also means”"the proposed dwelling is out of keeping with those nearby” this word is interesting because that is not what I think of when I hear the word dwelling.

Big Idea

Right Path

“Jonas was glad that he had, over the years chosen to do his hours in a variety of places so that he would experience the differences.” (37) It shows that he chose his path and wasn't like a normal generic citizen.

Pose a Question

Why do they need facilities to wash the elderly people, why can't they do it themselves?

Impactful Moment

Essential Question

This chapter shows how you people are generic and are suppose to be like robots and have no emotion

Jonas meets Asher so that they can do their mandatory volunteer hours together, this is when children from 8 to 11 are going to find their interests and that is where they meet and work together.

10 of 29

Chapter 5

Lyla Schee

Interesting Word(s)

“Stirrings” (47)

The word is used after Jonas describes his dream. It is an initial sign of emotion. It is used in the Book of Rules, but whenever you get that feeling it has to be reported.

Big Idea

Individuality:

“Always better, less rude, to talk about things that were the same” (48). They do not talk to each other about things that are different. Their conversions are always about stuff they both experience.

Pose a Question

What are the pills supposed to change?

Impactful Moment

The dream “I think I was trying to convince her that she should get into the tub of water” (45). This was apart of an emotion filled dream that Jonas had. It created our wonders for what the pill does.

Essential Question

What are the dangers of conformity?

Jonas does not feel like his emotions are normal, but he wants to fit in.Some of his friends take the pill, but they never talk about is. He knows to take the pill though because he does not want to be punished.

11 of 29

Chapter 6

adum r

Interesting Word(s)

“Transgressions”, [58]

This word is used when Jonas is describing Fritz. This is a interesting word choice because instead of using more casual words, the author opted for a word like “Transgression”, which I think was used to show Jonas’s intellect.

Big Idea

A quote that connects to a big idea is “Like the Matching of Spouses and the Naming and Placement of newchildren, the Assignments thought through by the Committee of Elders." (62) This connects to the big idea of conformity, because the elders are shaping what everyone does.

Pose a Question

Why is loss so much more important in the community than release?

Impactful Moment

The most impactful moment was the Ceremonies of the loss and replacement of a boy named Caleb. “The entire community had performed the Ceremony of Loss together, murmuring” (56)

Essential Question

The dangers to conformity as seen in this chapter is that any single person in the community can be replaced, and how conforming to the standards reduces your value in the community because of this.

12 of 29

Chapter 7

Interesting Word(s)

1. Naming

2. Midday break

3. Chief

Big Idea

“Jonas bowed his head and searched through his mind. What had he done wrong?”

Pose a Question

Did the chief elder skip Jonas on purpose? Does this mean that he won’t get a job?

Impactful Moment

When Jonas had realized that the Chief Elder had skipped over him

Essential Question

The chief elder was calling out everyone’s numbers to be assigned a job, but then Jonas got skipped.

Daniella Puma

Chapter 8

Olivia zincenko

Interesting Word(s)

Piecemeal-used to show how the crowd died down

Fleeting- used to show how they can think that someone can be the new memory receiver for a short time (fleeting) and then picking someone else.

Select- instead of Jonas getting a job assigned or chosen for something he got selected which is much more.

Big Idea

Individuality

“Such a selection is very very rare”,the Chief ELder told the audience “Our community has only one ….” (76). This shows how Jonas was a special individual because he was the only one who was SELECTED instead of assigned a job, He was different than everyone else making him unique with his job. ANd it was only HIm who got this job.

Pose a Question

What other reasons do you think made the elders believe that he was suitable and select Jonas to be the next Receiver of Memory?

Impactful Moment

I think the most impactful moment was when Jonas got Selected to be the Memory Receiver because this was a very rare selection and was the most important because it was only him who got such a unique job, no one else did. (76) when they said there's only 1 Memory receiver and they've had theirs for quite a while so it was very special that Jonas got selected.

Essential Question

What are the dangers of conformity?

In this chapter you see how conformity makes you less known but when someone like Jonas gets such a unique job there presence is more known and are acknowledged so the dangers of conformity can make you a “regular person” who gets a regular job.

14 of 29

Chapter 9

Aneesa Odetallah

Interesting Word(s)

“Dwelling” (83)-

This word was used in the book to describe houses that people lived in.

“Receiver”(86) -

(Considered to be the most important job in the community)

Big Idea

Isolation

The big idea is isolation because jonas will be separated from the other twelves while his does his training. In the book it says “He remembered what the Chief Elder had said :That his training would be alone and apart”(Lowry 82). This means that jonas will be isolated from the other twelves

Pose a Question

When Jonas received his set of rules to be a receiver why did the committee instruct him that he was allowed to lie?

Impactful Moment

An Impactful moment in this chapter was when jonas found out in the rules being a receiver of memory would allow Jonas to lie to people without being punished which made him question if anyone else have had the same instruction as him. In the book, the giver, the author says “ what if others adults had, upon becoming twelves, received in their instructions the same terrifying sentence? What if they all have been instructed:You may lie”(Lowry 90)

Essential Question

What are the dangers of conformity? One of the dangers of conformity is that Jonas feels alone different from everyone else because he was selected to be the receiver chosen by the committee which made him feel isolated inside.

15 of 29

Chapter 10

Rory Needham

Interesting Word(s)

Diminish- this word was used to describe the level of energy Jonas has.

Deftly- This word was used to describe the way the man had flipped the switch

Big Idea

A big idea of chapter 10 is Isolation because Jonas is in the base of operations and it is only him and the old man. “I know, sir. I have read the instructions,” Jonas said. “So I may neglect to make thing as clear as I should” The man chuckled. “My job is important and has enormous honor. But that does not mean i am perfect and when I tried before to train a successor, i failed. Please ask any questions that will help you.”(97) This shows that it is only him and the man talking about what the job is.

Pose a Question

Who is the old man near the end of the chapter?

How are they transmitting snow into Jonas’s brain?

Is the old man going to die?

What is going to happen to Jonas?

Impactful Moment

An impactful moment in the book The Giver by Lois Lowry was when the old man told him about snow and downhill. “It’s as if . . .” The man paused… Of course you didn’t. You don’t know what snow is, do you? Jonas shook his head. Or a sled? Runners? No, sir, Jonas said. Downhill? The term means nothing to you Nothing, sir…I am going to transmit the memory of snow”(99-100) This is an impactful moment in the book because so far ,in not just Jonas’s life but everyone else's life, they have never see or experience magic.

Essential Question

What are the dangers of Conformity?

A danger of conformity is depretion. “Close your eyes. Relax. This will not be painful” Jonas remembered that he was allowed, that he had even been encouraged, to ask questions, “what are you going to do sir?” he asked, hoping that his voice didn’t betray his nervousness.”(100) This shows the danger of conformity (being deprest) because if I found out that my whole life was like a simulation or like that then I would probably get depressed.

16 of 29

Chapter 11

Avery Needham

Interesting Word(s)

Transmission: The giver is transmitting his memories to Jonas, as his giver did to him.

Climate Control: The higher powers control the climate in the community. This is why there isn’t any snow and nobody is getting sunburns.

Big Idea

“‘And hills, too,’ he added. ‘ They made conveyance of goods unwieldy. Trucks; buses. Slowed them down. So-’ He waved his hand, as if a gesture had caused hills ot disappear.’sameness,’ he concluded. The big idea of this quote is structure.

Pose a Question

Why does Jonas feel pain in the memory of the sunburn, when he isn’t actually getting sunburn?

Impactful Moment

“‘It was sunburn,’ the old man told him.’It hurt a lot,’ Jonas said, ‘ but I’m glad you gave it to me. I was interesting. And not I understand better, what it meant, that there would be pain.’” This is an impactful moment because this is the first time the Jonas has felt pain.

Essential Question

In this chapter, the dangers of conforming with the rules are that not everyone gets to see snow or feel pain ever. If you never feel these things or experience them, you won’t be prepared for when it happens in the real world.

17 of 29

Chapter 12

Mallory Narowitz

Interesting Word(s)

Phenomenon- this word was used to describe the change that jonas witnessed

Dumbfounded- this word was used to describe Jonas's reaction to the color red.

Big Idea

The big idea of this chapter was change because of the changes that jonas kept witnessing. The chapter states, ¨Jonas tried to sort it out in his mind so that he could explain it clearly. ´i think it's what you call seeing-beyond,’¨ (Lowry 115). This evidence shows that the change was indescribable and no one else has experienced it.

Pose a Question

Why did the people of the community in the past decide to get rid of all color?

Impactful Moment

The most impactful moment of chapter 12 was when Jonas realized what the change was and saw color for the first time. The book states, ¨΅i'm right then, ‘the giver said. ‘Your beginning to see the color red.¨ (Lowry 119). This moment was important because it is a very important part of Jonas's assignment.

Essential Question

The events of this chapter relate to the essential question because people in the community didn't even know about colors, they have no idea what it means to be different, this can be dangerous.

18 of 29

Chapter 13

Will McConnaughey

Interesting Word(s)

Family Units

I think it is interesting that they refer to families as units because it makes them seem very conformed. It just seems a bit harsh that they call them units.

Big Idea

Choice

At the beginning of the chapter Jonas is saying,” I want to wake up in the morning and decide things”(Lowry 123). This shows how he wants the freedom to be able to make choices and decisions.

Pose a Question

Why is The Giver so worried about people making the wrong decisions?

Impactful Moment

I believe the most impactful moment for this chapter was at the beginning when he was arguing with The Giver about seeing color and making choices. I believe this is the most impactful because he is arguing for his opinion and making a statement.

Essential Question

The events of this chapter relate to the essential question because the people are all not allowed to make any decisions and Jonas realized this. This could be dangerous as they are being forced into everything and this is greatly limiting them.

19 of 29

Chapter 14

Izzy Lapp

Interesting Word(s)

Jarred pg 137 - used to show how he was violently thrown into the air

Instantaneous pg 138 - shows how fast his pain was taken away

Big Idea

“” But then everyone would be burdened and pained. They don’t want that. And that’s the real reason The Receiver is so vital to them, and so honored. They selected me - and you - to lift that burden from themselves” (Lowry 142). Shows why Jonas is the new Receiver which was important in developing the book.

Pose a Question

Why is Jonas not allowed to talk about his training?

Why does Jonas have to relive the memories instead of just being told them?

Impactful Moment

“Jonas realized something. “‘ That means, “‘ he said slowly, “‘ that you have memories of destruction. And you have to give them to me, too, because I have to get wisdom”’ (Lowry 142) .This was impactful because it showed Jonas why all of this pain was happening.

Essential Question

Jonas feels like he doesn’t fit in because no one understands the pain he is going through which is similar to conformity because everyone has fit in their whole life now he is alone and afraid.

20 of 29

Chapter 15

Maksim Jungeberg

Interesting Word(s)

Grotesquely- A word that describes something as repulsively ugly or something in a distorted manner. This word is interesting because it mostly describes the whole chapter, especially when he sees the Givers bloody warfare flashback-page 150

Big Idea

“The Giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done to Jonas. Forgive me, he said”. This shows that the memories can hurt and help depending on who he decides to get them from.

Pose a Question

How do you think this memory that Jonas gets of the warfare the Giver experienced will affect him throughout the rest of the book/story and what do you think the warfare was about and what did it lead too.

Impactful Moment

I believe the most important moment from this chapter is when Jonas gets the Givers memory of warfare because he learns about the bloody and painful warfare he had never known about before that moment.

Essential Question

Jonas feels that he is being he is an outcast because of the memories he is given and all the things he is seeing and feeling from the people he gets them from

21 of 29

Chapter 16

Antony He

Interesting Word(s)

The interesting word I chose was luxuriating. I chose this because it isn’t a word people use a lot

“Still luxuriating in the warm and comforting memory.” (Lowry 155)

Big Idea

“He sat in his dwelling alone, watching through the window, seeing children at play, citizens bicycling home from uneventful days at work, ordinary lives free of anguish” (Lowry 152). This quote represents ignorance as the people of the community are free from pain while Jonas and the Giver are fully aware of pain

Pose a Question

Why did the Elders remove the concept of family

Impactful Moment

“‘Do you understand why it’s inappropriate to use a word like ‘love’?” Mother asked. Jonas nodded. “Yes, thank you, I do,” he replied slowly. It was his first lie to his parents.” (Lowry 160)

This was an impactful moment because it was the first time Jonas had ever lied

Essential Question

The dangers of conformity is that it takes away a lot of what we have today. In chapter 16, it's shown that Jonas doesn’t even know what Christmas or the concept of family

22 of 29

Chapter 17

Raaga Gouru

Interesting Word(s)

Strewn- In the book, this word is used to describe how all the bicycles were untidily scattered out on the ground by the park.

Trudged- describes the way Jonas walks to the bench after rejecting a bike ride with Asher and Fiona. Jonas walks with heavy steps and slowly.

Big Idea

Ignorance

When Jonas tries to explain to Asher how the game everyone was playing was like war, Asher cuts off Jonas and doesn’t even listen to what Jonas was saying. Asher just apologized and left. “‘You had no way of knowing this. I didn’t know it myself until recently. But it’s a cruel game. In the past, there have--’ ‘I said I apologize, Jonas.’” (Lowry 169)

Pose a Question

Why is Jonas reliving the memories given by the Giver?

Since Jonas stopped taking the pills, what will happen to him if he continues not to take them?

Impactful Moment

The most impactful moment from this chapter is when Jonas goes in the middle of the field where all the kids are playing a game of war in. “In his mind, Jonas saw again the face of a boy who had lain dying on a field and had begged him for water. He had a sudden choking feeling, as if it were difficult to breathe” (Lowry 168). This is the most impactful moment because Jonas relives a memory that the Giver gave to him. This is the first time something like this happens to Jonas.

Essential Question

What are the dangers of conformity?

The dangers of conformity is that it can cause certain people to feel like they don’t belong or to feel lonely. For example, in this chapter when Jonas tries to explain the game the kids are playing is not a good game, no one understands him or listens to him. Everyone’s brains are basically wired the same so they don’t have memories but Jonas does have memories and the only one besides him to have them is the Giver. This could make Jonas feel lonely and odd because he is the only one whose has memories and feels this way out of all of the kids.

23 of 29

Chapter 18

Priya Dunn

Interesting Word(s)

“Serene” (175) - used to describe Rosemary, the first Receiver-in-Training, used as a synonym for “self-possessed”

Big Idea

The Big Idea of this chapter is choice. The book reads, “‘She asked for release, and they had to give it to her. I never saw her again,” (179). This shows how Rosemary made the choice to be released, so now that choice is taken from Jonas.

Pose a Question

Do the people in the community still have the memories from Rosemary now?

Impactful Moment

An Impactful Moment was when the Giver began to think about the idea of helping the community if the memories were ever given to them. I think this is important because it shows how the ideas of everyone having choice and individuality are starting to form.

Essential Question

This chapter shows the dangers of conformity when Rosemary asked for release. The community made it so she was unprepared for feelings of loss. Their standard of conformity ended up causing more problems when the memories were released.

24 of 29

Chapter 19

Emmett Byrne

Interesting Word(s)

Seldom (Lowry 182)

Seldom means rarely, when they use seldom they refer to how The Giver rarely sits and talks as him and Jonas get into detailed conversation about the release of memories

Big Idea

“Jonas felt a ripping sensation inside himself, the feeling of terrible pain clawing its way forward to emerge in a cry” (Lowry 189) -The evidence shows how Jonas is finding his emotion and finding the answer to one of his biggest emotions

Pose a Question

What gestures and motions did Jonas recognize in the ceremony?

Instead of releasing the people do they kill them instead ?

Impactful Moment

“The memory came back. He killed it! My father killed it! Jonas said to himself, stunned at what he was realizing.” (Lowry 188) This is for sure the climax of this chapter, and shows Jonas the truth about the releasing of his counterparts.

Essential Question

What are the dangers of conformity?

By being so conformed to his regular tasks and life he has never realized the actual fact that the ceremonies aren’t as they may seem. It makes Jonas aware to new emotions, changing his perspective on all parents.

25 of 29

Chapter 20

Katey Bowers

Interesting Word(s)

Rueful- expressing sorrow especially when in a slightly humorous way.

This was used to describe The Giver when he was telling Jonas stories about Rosemary.

Big Idea

The big Idea was choice. In the chapter it says, “But Jonas was certain that he could slip away, unseen, from his house…” (Lowry 198). This quote connects to the main idea of choice because it shows how Jonas makes the decision to leave the community.

Pose a Question

How do you think people will react when Jonas leaves the community?

Impactful Moment

The most impactful moment was when Jonas asked the giver to go with him to find elsewhere. The book says, “‘I want you to come, Giver’…’I want to, Jonas. If I go with you, and together we take away all their protection from memories…’” (Lowry 195). This is impactful because this moment Jonas displays disobedience and courage in planning to leave and fear in The Giver because he rejected the offer..

Essential Question

This chapter relates to the essential question because Jonas feels angry that others aren’t aware of the truth and that he is the one assigned that burden. This can be dangerous because being the only person who is aware of the truth can make him feel isolated and angry as demonstrated in the beginning of the chapter.

26 of 29

Chapter 21

Gavin Banning

Interesting Word(s)

Frazzled- showing the effects of exhaustion or strain-Used to describe the night crew after leaving gabriel at the nurturing center.

Languid- displaying or having a disinclination for physical exertion or effort; slow and relaxed- Used to describe the waters movement in a memory given to gabriel by jonas.

Big Idea

In the chapter it says, “That night, Jonas was forced to flee. He left the dwelling

shortly after the sky became dark and the community still. It

was terribly dangerous because some of the work crews were still about, but he moved stealthily and silently, staying in the shadows, making his way past the darkened dwellings and the empty Central Plaza, toward the river. Beyond the Plaza he could see the House of the Old, with the Annex behind it, outlined against the night sky. But he could not stop there. There was no time. Every minute counted now, and every minute must take him farther from

the community”(Lowry 163). This quote connects to the main idea of freedom as it shows that jonas is making his way out of the community. Once jonas leaves, the community will be burdened with all the memories the receiver has received and jonas will be free.

Pose a Question

Why has the community and search planes stopped looking for jonas?

Impactful Moment

The most impactful moment of this chapter wawa when jonas decides to leave the community. “ He felt, surprisingly, no fear, nor any regret at leaving the community behind. But he felt a very deep sadness that he had left his closest friend behind. He knew that in the danger of his escape he must be absolutely silent; but with his heart and mind, he called back and hoped that with his capacity for hearing-beyond, The Giver would know that Jonas had said goodbye(lowry 163). This is the most impactful moment in the chapter because it shows that jonas is committed to leaving the community.

Essential Question

The dangers of conformity can cause people to look for a way to cause change. Jonas does not want the community to keep living in unison so he leaves knowing it will cause change.

27 of 29

Chapter 22

Noah Auman

Interesting Word(s)

Starving: “Jonas remembered, suddenly and grimly, the time in his childhood when he had been chastised for misusing a word. The word had been ‘starving.’ You have never been starving, he had been told. You will never be starving.” (Lowry 217)

Big Idea

“If he had stayed, he would have starved in other ways, He would have lived a life hungry for feelings, for color, for love. And Gabriel? For Gabriel there would have been no life at all.” (Lowry 218) This shows freedom. Freedom to experience color, feelings, and love. If Jonas had stayed in the community, he wouldn’t experience any of those things. Gabriel wouldn’t have been given the freedom to choose whether to live or die.

Pose a Question

Why has Jonas given up all hope?

Impactful Moment

“Gabriel had not cried during the long frightening journey. Now he did. He cried because he was hungry and cold and terribly weak. Jonas cried, too, for the same reasons, and another reason as well. He wept because he was afraid now that he could not save Gabriel. He no longer cared about himself.” (Lowry 218). He no longer cares whether he lives or dies, he only wants Gabriel to be spared. This shows that Jonas has given up all hope that he will survive and he only wants Gabriel to be okay.

Essential Question

Conformity can cause people to leave their protected community/city and go into the wilderness where they are likely to die from lack of food or extreme climates that they can’t survive in. Jonas leaves his community because he can’t let everyone else continue to just be the same, and he takes Gabriel with him. Jonas then quickly runs out of food and gets plunged into cold weather that he doesn’t think he can survive in.

28 of 29

Chapter 23

Abbi Arold

Interesting Word(s)

Snow - This is the first time Jonas gets to see snow. The giver gave him the memories but now he has memories of his own.

Big Idea

The big idea of the chapter is choice. Jonas and Gabe get to choose what they are going to do in Elsewhere. The text states “ Downward, downward, faster and faster. Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him: and the baby” (Lowry 225). Jonas chose to leave the community and he get accepted into a new community. Elsewhere.

Pose a Question

Are Jonas and Gabe going to survive in Elsewhere?

What happens to the Community with Jonas gone?

Impactful Moment

The most impactful moment in the chapter is when Jonas and Gabe go over the top of the hill and finds a sled. This is one of many memories that The GIver gave to Jonas that he is now experiencing his own memories.

Essential Question

The dangers of conformity cause people to change for the rules or what other people think is right. Jonas left the community so he would not have to change for them. He wanted to he his own person.

29 of 29

Chapter 23

Maria Anagnostou

Interesting Word(s)

Big Idea

The big idea for this chapter is choice because Jonas chose to keep going on there way to Elsewhere instead of giving up and going back. “Yet he felt it: felt that Elsewhere was not far away”(Lowry 219). This shows how Jonas felt like it was right to leave and he made the right choice.

Pose a Question

How are they going to survive in Elsewhere?
